It was a day dedicated to the fish, not the fishermen, as the 14th annual Seekonk Lions Doug Allan Memorial Fishing Tournament kicked off this past Memorial Day at the picturesque Grist Mill Pond. Sixty eager kids, along with their proud parents, gathered on a beautiful morning filled with anticipation and camaraderie, all eager to see who would land the most prized trout lurking beneath the tranquil waters.
However, the fish had other plans that day, proving to be quite the elusive challenge for both seasoned anglers and those trying their luck for the very first time. Despite the excitement and effort, only a tiny minnow about 3 inches long was caught, and the only other "treasure" pulled from the pond was a small winter glove—likely lost on a chilly day and now serving as a quirky souvenir.
But the true spirit of the event shone through, proving that it’s not just about the catch but about community, fun, and making memories. The day culminated with a lively banquet at the American Legion, where everyone enjoyed delicious Chick-fil-A sandwiches loaded with all the fixings. Thanks to over $2,000 in donations and gifts generously provided by our many sponsors, the event proved to be a fantastic success—not just in prizes, but in the joy and camaraderie shared by all.
Most importantly, the smiles on the kids’ faces and the raffle prizes in their hands reminded us that sometimes, it’s the effort and the experience that matter most. It was a day to remember, and a wonderful reason to come back year after year.
