“In October 2021, Mary D. Irons passed way after a ten-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease. In recognition of her involvement with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) which spanned 44 years, beginning with her serving as one of the founding members of the Wampanoag Women’s Club (WWC) in Rumford in 1977, the Mary Irons Award for Membership was created in October 2025. This award recognizes the GFWC RI member responsible for securing the most new members for her Club. At the May 16th, 2026, GFWC RI Annual Convention, the inaugural Award was presented to Mary French, a member of the GFWC Warwick Women’s Club for increasing her Club membership by eleven. Also of note, the GFWC WWC was awarded the State Creativity Award for outstanding achievement in Legislation.”
