On May 17th, several young girls attended our Felicity‑themed Sewing Bee. Surrounded by the historic desks and slate boards, the girls stepped back into the world of 1774 as they learned simple hand‑sewing skills with Dawn Azar, our director.
They threaded needles, practiced careful stitches, and worked on a small project that echoed the handiwork young girls once learned in early Colonial America. Each girl created their own patriotic sachet called a “sweete bag” filled with fragrant herbs. They proudly shared their finished pieces, delighted to discover how enjoyable sewing could be. During a break, the girls enjoyed refreshing slices of watermelon and cool water — a treat that fit perfectly with the warm, relaxed spirit of the day. After sewing, the group played with several old‑fashioned games and activities, the kind children once enjoyed long before screens and gadgets. These activities added a lively, playful finish to their historical afternoon. The event not only celebrated traditional skills but also brought the schoolhouse to life in a meaningful way. It offered the girls a hands‑on connection to the past. The Hornbine Schoolhouse continues to be a place where history is not only remembered but lived, one stitch at a time
CLASSROOM VISITS
Several 3rd grade classes from Sumerset, recently spent a full school day at the Hornbine School. Their enthusiasm was unmistakable. The students were captivated by the old desks, slate boards, and the feeling of “going back in time.” They took part in lessons, recited aloud, practiced writing on slates, and learned what school was like more than a century ago. They especially enjoyed having Richard Wheeler as their teacher for the day, whose lively, old‑fashioned style brought the experience to life. By the end of the visit, it was clear that their day at Hornbine was not only educational but genuinely enjoyable. We are now accepting new class visits for the upcoming season, and we would be delighted to welcome more students to experience a day at the Hornbine One‑Room Schoolhouse.
