Seekonk Baseball Wins MIAA Division 4 State Title; Warriors and Falcons Enjoy Historic Runs

Posted

Three local high school programs enjoyed remarkable postseason runs this spring, highlighted by the Seekonk High School boys baseball team’s MIAA Division 4 State Championship. The Warriors captured their third state title in four seasons, while the Seekonk girls softball team advanced to the Division 4 Final Four for the first time in 35 years. Dighton-Rehoboth’s defending back-to-back state champion softball team also made another impressive run to the Division 3 Final Four, giving local fans plenty to celebrate this postseason.

Seekonk Boys Baseball
The Seekonk Warriors baseball team put together a remarkable postseason run, capturing the MIAA Division 4 State Championship with four straight tournament victories over some of the state’s toughest competition. They were matched up with #23 Uxbridge in the round of 16 at home on June 3rd, with the boys eliminating the Spartans with a 7-1 score. They punched their way into the Elite Eight of the tournament, leading to a face-off against the 2nd best team in all of D4 in East Bridgewater on Saturday, June 6th. The Warriors—completed the upset. Seekonk defeated East Bridgewater 5-2 while Warriors star pitcher Cole Arruda had a sturdy overall performance allowing 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 earned run and struck out 8 batters to rip away the win on the mound. At bat on offense, Arruda had 1 hit (triple) and 1 RBI. Avian Da Rosa had 2 RBIs and 1 hit (single) and Colin Lush had 1 hit (single) and 1 RBI. The Warriors—came out the gate strong. Seekonk scored 3 runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Da Rosa hit a single that scored 2 runs (Austin Robinson and Javier Borges) and Lush hit a sacrifice fly which scored a run (Avian Da Rosa).

As the state tournament dwindled down to just four teams, the Warriors next played the #3 seed Dennis-Yarmouth (18-7) at a neutral site at Mohan Park in Dorchester on Tuesday, June 9th. Now this one—was electric. The Warriors got on the board first with a couple of runs in the first two innings. A leadoff triple from Javi Borges which drove Austin Robinson in with a sacrifice fly, followed by Colin Lush getting to third on a long fly ball that was dropped by Dennis-Yarmouth center fielder Matt Garbitt. Two batters later, Lucas Pimentel hit a ball high up into center, scoring Lush for a 2-0 lead. The Dolphins fought right back, tying up the game in the 2nd inning with 3 hits in the inning. Seekonk regained the lead 4-3 on a two-RBI triple from Avian DaRosa.

The Dolphins tied it up again off of a four-pitch walk, then stole second and third, and scored on a groundout. Seven innings wasn’t enough to decide this tight contest between these two teams, so it went into extra-innings–an MLB-like nine inning showdown. The golden swing of the bat came from… Seekonk. In the top of the 9th inning, Sophomore Cooper Flynn delivered a bases-clearing triple to give the Warriors a three-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth. 7-4 Warriors. Flynn not only was given a chance to put the nail in the coffin on offense—he had one more opportunity to literally put the game in his own hands. With a three-run lead, duel-threat Flynn would be on the mound to try to close it out for his boys like Shohei Ohtani. Two outs were all that remained to hopefully send this Warriors team back to another state title game. Cooper Flynn didn’t just deliver the clutch bases-loaded triple in the top of the ninth—he delivered a double-play to officially send the Warriors to the MIAA State Championship—their fourth appearance in five years.

The boys would be matched up against the #1 team in all of D4 in the state title game, as they’d have to take down and upset the Hamilton-Wenham Generals—a team whose only lost a single game all season long, including the playoffs—to bring back home some more state championship hardware. With an MIAA State Championship on the line, the Warriors squared off against the dominant Generals at Polar Park, home of the Worcester Red Sox (WooSox), the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, June 13th.

This game—was a barn burner. After a back and forth contest for state glory, it came down to the final inning to decide who would bring home a state title to their respective community. With the game-tying run at second and two outs in the top of the 7th inning—Brayden McBride—miraculously came through. With the Warriors down 3-2 with two outs in the final inning, McBride and the Warriors were down to their last string of hope for a state title in an 0-2 count after McBridge fouled three straight times. Then, McBride sent a rocket of a grounder deep down past the 3rd base foul line, clearing the bases on a double to erupt the crowd with the Warriors taking a 4-3 lead in clutch time. In the bottom of the 7th, it came down to two outs remaining for the Generals with their tying runner at third; It was like the ending scene of an iconic baseball movie. Generals Owen Waddell took a shot on a pop-up bunt but senior first baseman Austin Robinson snagged it, quickly fired the ball to third, where Avian DaRosa caught the ball and simultaneously reached to tag out Cormac Heney. Heney was… OUT! The Seekonk Warriors baseball program are once again MIAA Division 4 State Champions! The #7 Warriors officially upset the #1 Division 4 team in Hamilton-Wenham to achieve the ultimate goal they had before the season started, claiming their third MIAA State Title in four seasons after going back-to-back in 2023 and 2024.

Seekonk Girls Softball
Just like the other two local successful programs, the Seekonk Warriors girls softball squad also stomped forward in their pursuit for state glory. They earned a first round bye into the round of 32 and would take on the #21 ranked Cohasset High on Tuesday, June 2nd. The Warriors defeated Cohasset 10-7 to advance to the Sweet 16, while Seekonk’s Shelby Quinn was the offensive star in the game for the Warriors as she reached base on all 4 plate appearances, including firing a missile of a homer over center field, 2 walks, and 3 RBIs. The girls led 10-4 in the top of the seventh inning and controlled much of the game, and they next played #5 seed Oxford at their barn a few days later—completing an upset win 8-2 over a tough team. Seekonk’s Shelby Quinn and Sarah Rickard showed out at the plate for the Warriors in the upset win. Quinn hit a home run for the second game in a row in the MIAA tournament, and scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Sarah Rickard had 2 hits (triple, single), scored 2 runs, and had 2 RBIs. Pitcher Anya Fagundes also shut the door on Oxford as she allowed just a single earned run and had 10 strikeouts. The Warriors would then be matched up against the 13th ranked West Bridgewater at home on Saturday, June 6th. The Warriors came out hot and outlasted the Wildcats taking a 6-3 W, while Seekonk’s Shelby Quinn shined at bat for the Warriors going a perfect 4-4. Quinn hit a 2-run Home Run, 3 singles, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Pitcher Anya Fagundes had another outstanding performance on the mound as she struck out 7 batters and allowed only 2 earned runs. At bat, she also went a perfect 4-4 with 4 singles. Additionally, Callie Bosh made several spectacular catches for outs on defense in right field and Kelly Leinson had a strong game on defense at second base making plays for outs, including a great flip throw for an out. The girls officially advanced to the Final Four of the MIAA Playoffs, and Seekonk’s Shelby Quinn has hit a home run in all three MIAA Tournament games for this team’s run. In the three MIAA Tournament games Shelby Quinn has played in to this point, Quinn has gone 7-10 with 3 Home Runs, 4 singles and 7 RBIs.

For the first time in Seekonk High’s history—both their baseball and softball programs have earned a spot in the Final Four of the MIAA State Tournament. The girls would be booked in the Final Four against the #1 MIAA D4 team—the undefeated, 18-0 Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter (AMSA) Eagles squad. Academics—is clearly not the only thing this Marlborough school excels in. But this Warriors team refused to let this dominant team intimidate them, as they fought until the very last out in a real close, gut-wrenching 4-3 defeat to AMSA. AMSA pitcher Ava McLeod stood out as she allowed only 4 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out 7 batters, while also recording a hit (single) and 2 RBIs at the plate to send her Eagles squad to the MIAA State Championship. Advanced Math and Science Academy scored a few runs within the first couple of innings for a 2-0 lead, but the Warriors answered back strongly. Seekonk scored 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning as Haley Boutin hit a double to center field, which scored 2 runs (Sarah Rickard and Shelby Quinn). Emma Queenan then hit a go-ahead single to center field which scored 1 run (Haley Boutin) for a 3-2 Warriors lead. But every monumental game such as this one… calls for a hero. Guilamina Yost was that hero for her AMSA squad. Yost cracked a go-ahead 2 run home run over the center field fence scoring 2 runs (Kathleen Galvin and Yost) for a 4-3 AMSA lead. AMSA refused to give up their 4-3 lead as this clutch homer from Yost earned them a date for the MIAA Division 4 State Title game.

Overall, for Seekonk, Callie Bosh had 2 hits (2 singles), Shelby Quinn had 1 walk and scored 1 run, Haley Boutin recorded 1 hit (double) and 2 RBIs, while Emma Queenan also had 1 hit (single) and 1 RBI. Warrior’s starting pitcher Anya Fagundes pitched 5 innings and struck out 3 batters, including Sarah Rickard and Shelby Quinn each having a strong game making strong plays for outs on defense.

This Warriors softball program had a historic run and season entirely, making it to the Final Four of the MIAA Tournament for the first time in 35 years and finished the season with an overall

D-R Girls Softball
The #1 ranked team in all of MIAA Division 3 continued their fight to three-peat as back-to-back-to-back MIAA D3 State Champions. After a dominant start to their 2026 run in the state tournament, this Falcons team played Wilmington in the Sweet 16—they gave the Wildcats no chance from the start, crushing their opponent with a 13-0 shutout. D-R’s Zoe Fortin led the way as she reached base on all 4 plate appearances which included 3 hits (2 doubles, 1 single), including 1 walk and 3 RBIs. Kylie Smith also had 4 RBIs, 2 hits, and a 3-run rocket home run. They punched their ticket into the Elite Eight of MIAA D3 softball, and next played the #8 seed Saint Mary’s at home on June 6th. The girls successfully continued to stomp forward towards their MIAA State Title goal, coming back all the way down from 12-6 and beating St. Mary’s in an exciting, high-scoring game 16-13. The Falcons had a flock of stellar performances at the plate with Cam Cloonan going 4-5, scoring 5 RBIs, 4 Runs, and capping off her day with the game-winning grand slam! Mia Ribeiro was perfect swinging the bat going 4-4, scoring 3 RBIs, and 2 Runs. Sara Marsella also went 3-5, scoring 3 RBIs and 1 Run and Kylie Smith batted 3-4, scoring 2 RBI, 2 Runs, and a home run to go with it. Marsella also proved how versatile she is on both sides of the field. On the mound, Marsella threw 8 strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched while only allowing 2 hits despite her one error. Falcons. The Falcons put on display how badly they wanted this one, scoring two 5-run innings in the 4th and 6th inning to cap off the win, digging deep when it mattered to earn their spot in the Final Four of D3.

The girls would then come to meet with a very familiar foe in Apponoquet at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, June 9th. But Apponoquet—pulled off the upset. This Falcons girls softball team had an outstanding run, but all good things must come to an end. The Falcons suffered a heartbreaking battle to the bitter end in a 2-1 loss to the 5th-seeded Apponequet. Neither team refused to let up in this Final Four battle as both teams proved that indeed, “defense wins championships.” Apponequet sophomore pitcher Reese Taylor really stood out in this game as she only allowed 1 hit, 3 walks, including zero earned runs and an incredible 14 strikeouts; She struck out all 3 batters who she faced in the bottom of the 7th and final inning. As a matter of fact, this game featured zero RBIs and 3 total hits between both teams. Dighton-Rehoboth’s lone run came in the bottom of the 6th inning. After Camryn Cloonan walked, stole second base, and then advanced to third base via a grounder by Sara Marsella, Haley Gomes was at bat for D-R. After the sixth pitch, Cloonan scored on a passed ball to tie it at 1-1 a piece. The game winner came for Apponoquet in the top of the 7th. Ashlyn Bogdan singled to center field, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jill Gagnier, and then Megan Suneson hit a grounder which scored Ashlyn Bogdan via a fielding error for a 2-1 Apponoquet lead. The Lakers sealed the game shutting the door on the Falcons on defense to keep their lead for a 2-1 victory.

This Falcons team had an outstanding season, despite not getting the result they wanted as three-peat state champs and will likely be a contender next year. This program still made the Final Four as defending back-to-back MIAA State Champs, and finished with an impressive overall record of 17-3.
