Rumford plays tonight in Newport. EP tomorrow in Bristol.

Ron Silva All-Star Tournament:
Rumford Little League 10U baseball team defeated Bristol 6-3 at Kim Rock Field on Monday July 12th. The win propels Rumford 9-10’s to the championship of the Ron Silva All-Star tournament. Rumford will play the winner of the Barrington-Bristol game (July 18) at Sherwood Field in Barrington. That game will be played on July 23rd 5:45 pm at a field TBD. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday July 24th at a field TBD. (The final game may be played on July 23rd depending on the bracket results). The Reporter will update the schedule at

This is the third consecutive year that Rumford 10u All Stars advanced to the Ron Silva Championship. Great pitching, timely hitting and great base running led them to the win over Bristol LL on July 11th.

The 9-10 tournament is named for long time Riverside Little League volunteer and former area league administrator, Ron Silva. The Forbes Field Baseball Complex has been renamed the Ron Silva Baseball Complex. Ron Silva, in his 80's now, lives in Arizona. However Silva continues to assist the league with paperwork and with clearing volunteers for little league involvement. Silva has been an integral part of the District Two little league division, which is the state's largest.

District Two 10U Tournament:
While amid the Ron Silva tournament, the Rumford LL (8,9,10) team plays in the 10U District Two all-star tournament play tonight in Newport at 5:45pm Horgan Field. “The 10U District Tournament will be a tough challenge and a chance to enter the States,” said a Rumford LL statement. The winners of tonight’s Pawtucket-Bristol/Warren and Rumford-Newport games will play each other on July 13th at 5:45 pm at a field TBA.

District Two Major Division (11,12):
East Providence Majors to play tomorrow Wednesday in Bristol:
The East Providence Major Division little league all-stars advanced in all-star play with a 2-1 win over Pawtucket on Saturday, July 9th at Rodericks Field at Pierce Stadium. The game was close to the last inning with East Providence holding on to their slim lead throughout the game. The team, made up of players from EP Central and Riverside little leagues, will play next on Wednesday, July 13th against Bristol/Warren at Bristol Memorial Field.

East Providence did all their scoring in the first inning. Jake Sousa led off the game with a walk and scored the first run after advancing base on three passed balls. Jonathan Renaud walked and quickly stole second and third base. On a passed ball, Renaud sored the second run.

Pawtucket came right back in the bottom of the first with a leadoff walk by Jacob Barry, who then got to second base on a delayed steal. A bloop single to right field fell between the defense and Pawtucket had runners on first and third. After a ground out from Parker Andrews to Jose Figueroa, a fielder’s choice scored Barry for Pawtucket’s first and only run of the game. Renaud had a strikeout in the inning.

East Providence held on to their slim lead and came through with good defense and complete game pitching by Renaud for the victory. Renaud had 9 strikeouts in the game for EP. “An example of good pitching, timely baserunning and defensive plays, gave us the win,” said EP coaches after the game. “We don’t always dominate teams, but we pull together and work hard to win.”

These Townies will have to continue that process as the games get more difficult closer to the finals. East Providence faces a good Bristol/Warren team on Wednesday, July 13th and if they can advance, will face a Portsmouth team which hasn’t lost yet in the tournament. That game is scheduled for Saturday, July 16th 5:45 at a field TBD. If Portsmouth wins Saturday, they will be the champions. Should EP win, they will play again on Sunday July 17th 5:45 field TBD.
