Volunteers Needed to Teach at Our One‑Room Schoolhouse
Our historic one‑room schoolhouse is looking for volunteer teachers. If you enjoy working with children, sharing stories, or keeping local history alive, we’d love to welcome you to our volunteer team. Serving as a volunteer teacher is not about memorizing dates or delivering lectures. It is about giving visiting students a chance to experience education as it once was. You don’t need a teaching background to participate. What matters most is enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to engage with young learners. We provide all the materials, sample lessons, and historical information you’ll need. Visits typically take place on weekday mornings to early afternoons during the school year.
In the past, hundreds of students have visited our schoolhouse to learn how children once studied, played, and built community in a single-room classroom. They arrive curious and excited, ready to imagine themselves as students from another era. Volunteer teachers help guide that transformation. By leading short lessons, demonstrating historical tools, or simply sharing stories about early schooling, volunteer teachers become the bridge between past and present.
For visiting public school classes, this experience is more than a field trip—it’s a chance to see, hear, and feel what education looked like generations ago. To make these visits truly come alive, we are seeking volunteers who would enjoy teaching in this unique and inspiring setting.
There is something unforgettable about walking into The Hornbine School. The wooden desks, the slate boards, the smell of old books, and the quiet echo of lessons once taught all create a sense of stepping back in time.
