Senate Candidate John Deaton Visits Rehoboth

Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Deaton met with supporters Thursday at the American Legion. Deaton is hoping to unseat Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat, in the November 3 election. However, Markey is facing a primary challenge from Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton.

Deaton grew up in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, where he had to deal with violence and poverty. He chronicles his experiences in a book, “Food Stamp Warrior.”

Deaton earned a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1992 and a juris doctor from New England School of Law in 1995. Following law school, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1995 to 2002. He also worked as Marine Senior Defense Counsel and Chief Prosecutor at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona and later as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona.

He currently works as a trial attorney at Deaton Law Firm, which he founded in 2006.

This is Deaton’s second campaign for U.S. Senate. In 2024, Deaton ran against incumbent Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat, but was unsuccessful.

Deaton believes Markey is an “extremist” and is “too old” to be serving in Congress. Deaton cited Markey’s support for policies such as Medicare for All and the Green New Deal as Markey’s attempt at “appeasing the far left” of his party.

Deaton has focused his campaign on curbing illegal immigration in Massachusetts and lowering electricity costs, which he explains are the highest in the nation. “We’re dead last in private sector job growth,” Deaton noted. “We have businesses leaving (the state).”

He also wants to end the Democratic party’s dominance in state politics, adding Governor Maura Healey has been a “disaster.” “This is our best chance,” Deaton continued. “I want a Republican governor.”

Deaton also hopes to fight corruption in Washington by instituting what he calls a “common sense agenda.”

Deaton’s motto sums up his philosophy of life: “no fear and never give up.”
