RE: Dr. Azar responds to the Settlement Agreement between the D-R School District and the Rehoboth Board of Selectmen
The recent articles regarding the litigation between the Town of Rehoboth and the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional School District leave important context out of the discussion.
If new leadership was truly the catalyst for resolving this matter, then it should not have taken four years, exerting thousands more dollars, to resolve.
Equally important, the courts found no fault on the part of the school district, yet the town/district spent approximately a quarter of a million dollars of taxpayer money litigating the matter to provoke negativity with the word ‘lawsuit’.
As I stated publicly at the time, this litigation was an attempt by selectmen to exert control over the school district. This litigation was filed following the 2019 vote. That 2019 vote did leave Rehoboth’s municipality and the school district on stable financial footing unlike many area communities.
Going forward, it would be advantageous for public officials and administration to not expend further time, efforts or taxpayer dollars on comments about this “frivolous lawsuit”. Rehoboth public officials focus should be on the citizens of our town and the DR administration’s focus on students.
Dr. Anthony C. Azar, Retired Superintendent of Schools 2014-2022
