The 2025-2026 academic year for Dighton-Rehoboth Regional Schools will be extended due to last month’s snow days. The schools were closed for an entire week as a result of the February 23 blizzard, which dumped over two and a half feet of snow on the region.
On March 10, the School Committee opted not to adjust the school calendar. Superintendent Bill Runey had requested allowing classes to be held on Good Friday as well as on professional development days.
The last day of school will now be June 30.
“The longer we go into June, the warmer our buildings are,” Runey explained. “I just don’t think it’s good for kids. (The state’s Department of Education) are allowing us to finish on Friday, June 26 provided that we meet our instructional hours.”
Runey said state law mandates 900 instructional hours at the elementary level and 990 instructional hours at the secondary level.
Runey ruled out holding classes on Juneteenth and Memorial Days because they are federal holidays.
