Just like those who preceded us in 1775, Rehoboth residents are once again needed to fill our ranks. The Rehoboth Minutemen Company is seeking your participation in celebrating our country’s 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.
The Rehoboth Minutemen Company was formed in 1992, in part, to organize and participate in Rehoboth’s 350th year anniversary. I’m sure many of you recall and enjoyed the epic battles and encampments which we orchestrated in conjunction with the town in 1993.
The unit also marches under Timothy Walker’s 22nd Massachusetts Regiment, and the 13th Continental Regiment, portraying the period from 1773 to 1776. From the original re-created unit to the present, many members have come and gone, however, the group is still active and needs your involvement and participation for the many events which honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. We are a not-for-profit organization, and provide historical programs, encampments, and battle re-enactments to the public.
During the American Revolution, Rehoboth sent 1,400 soldiers and sailors to fight for our liberty and independence during the 8 years of the war. At that time, many other surrounding towns were all part of Rehoboth, namely, Seekonk, East Providence, Pawtucket. Soldiers from these communities served as the Rehoboth contingent in the fledgling Continental Army.
We do have current members from some of these communities but are in need of men and women over the age of 16 to participate in the musket line, and other roles to represent the town of Rehoboth during the 250th Anniversary. Currently, only one Rehoboth resident participates in the musket line. I’m sure that there are many patriotic-minded individuals and history buffs who would find participation a rewarding, once in a lifetime experience.
We currently have members from as far west as Holyoke, and as far east as Wareham. These individuals travel long distances, and donate their time, to support our town unit, and keep our history alive.
Residents of Rehoboth are especially needed to participate since the Rehoboth 250th Anniversary Commission has asked the Minutemen to plan and run a major event for the town in the near future. We need local residents to participate in the unit and help out with this event to make it truly a memorable one.
Recently, in September of 2024, the Minutemen and the Rehoboth Historical Society co-sponsored a historical timeline event on Redway Plain, which covered the Roman Legion period through the Vietnam era. This event was a stellar event with over 1300 people attending over the weekend and getting rave reviews on it from both the participants and visitors! Photos and videos are available on our website. Volunteers from both groups spent countless hours organizing and running the event for your enjoyment. This event cost the town zero dollars!
We are a safe, fun, family-friendly organization, which is open to all ages. Both men and women are encouraged to participate in the musket line. Other than participating in the musket line, we are also encouraging men, women, and children to participate as fifers and drummers. Two drums are available for use to anyone who is interested in drumming. We will train you as a participant in the musket line and have capable instructors for the fife and drum section as well. We will also help you with your period clothing. Members are friendly and will help out newbies as much as they can. There are a limited amount of unit muskets available for new members use as well. We are also in need of an 18th Century doctor to take care of the “wounded”. We have all the medical equipment for you to use. We have tents, cooking implements, etc., to make for an authentic and immersive encampment experience as well. Experience “time travel” to the 18th Century that many do not have the opportunity to do so. A perfect experience for home-schooled children!
