Elizabeth Rose (Brady) Platt 94, wife of the late Gerald J. Platt, passed away January 3, 2023 (age 94)

Elizabeth was the first child of James and Elizabeth (Reynolds) Brady. She lived a young and happy life in East Providence, attending Sacred Heart School and then St. Francis Xavier Academy in Providence.

Upon her graduation, she was offered a job at American Emery Wheel Works in Providence where she worked for over 30 years, while raising her children. She also worked at Phil’s Donut Shop, the Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside as well as Stiller Distributors in Cranston.

Betty’s husband, Jerry, worked for New Haven Railroad, and later Amtrak, for 47 years.

Her children all attended St. Brendan Catholic School and East Providence Junior and Senior High Schools.

The family enjoyed many happy vacations at Matunuck Beach, Cape Cod, and later cruises and trips to Ireland to visit her mother’s home.

Betty is survived by her sister Catherine (Brady) Emery, her children and spouses Elizabeth Medeiros and Michael Gagnon, John and Jacqueline Platt, Catherine Canavan, Anne Platt, Paul and Melissa Platt, nieces, nephews and many second cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Gerald and son James.

Elizabeth has been a very active member of St. Brendan’s Church since her marriage in 1958. Her son James died in 2000 and her husband Gerald in 2015. They have lived in Riverside since 1958 and have 7 grandchildren (Laura Medeiros, Erin (Platt) Andrews, Christopher Platt, Michael Canavan, Joseph Canavan, Caitlin (Canavan) Pagan, and Brady Platt) and 5 great-grandchildren. She was happiest when surrounded by them.

She was an Irish Step dancer with her sister, a member of the Irish Music Club of RI for many years and the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary as well. Also, Betty was a reader at St. Brendan’s Church for many of her earlier years. Working for 36 years as a receptionist at the Smith-Mason Funeral Home was one of her joys as she was able to make people comfortable and at ease.

Visitation will be Sunday January 8, 2023 in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home 398 Willett Ave, Riverside, RI 02915 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be on Monday January 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM in St. Brendan Church, 60 Turner Ave Riverside, RI 02915.
