Seekonk Junior Warriors Host BVAYF Superbowls

Posted

The local American Youth Football chapter was fortunate enough to host the Blackstone Valley league Superbowls on Sunday. In addition to bringing exciting football for fans in town, the day was expected to add a four-figure sum to the coffers for Seekonk Junior Warriors.

Fans came out in large numbers for the games. At times, stands on both sides of the field were completely full. Most teams brought full cheerleading squads with them, filling the Mooney track as well.

Cars completely filled the Seekonk High School parking lots for the majority of the day. During the more anticipated games of the day, cars were parked up and down Ledge Road, adjacent to the school.

On the field, games were largely competitive, and kept the large crowds engaged throughout. At the Junior Mite level, South Attleboro defeated the Johnston Panthers 25-7.

In the 4th Grade game, the first of four CLCF Chiefs teams took the field, where they won 27-6 over the Lincoln Lions. The 5th Grade Chiefs were also victorious 21-0 over the Johnston Panthers. When the 6th Grade Chiefs defeated the Fairlawn Cardinals 14-13 on Sunday evening, it had been almost six hours since a team from another town had won.

As the lights came on, the North End Providence 49ers took the field, where they beat the cross-town rival Packers 19-13. Finally in the 8th Grade, the most anticipated contest of the day, the West Warwick Steelers upset CLCF 28-7.

If you remember Pop-Warner seasons with players divided by weight and age, these "Grades" may be a bit confusing. The Seekonk Junior Warriors compete in American Youth Football. These Superbowls were played by teams divided only by class year.

In recent years, Seekonk has picked up players from neighboring towns where Pop-Warner still rules the day. Players too heavy for their own age group's Pop-Warner team (or in a town with no organized youth football) have recently found a home in Seekonk.

Unfortunately no Seekonk teams reached the big game this year. Players, coaches, and parents were still excited to see these contests, and worked as volunteers most of the day. They served concessions, aided in setting up fields, and kept facilities organized to accommodate the large crowds.
