James (Jim) Packer Horton, age 93, passed away in his home in Rehoboth on Monday, January 15, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Winifred Louise (Harris) Horton with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. He was born in Taunton, MA and was the son of the late Leslie P. and Hazel (Wilbur) Horton.

Jim grew up in Dighton, MA and graduated from Dighton High School with the class of 1948. He attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA; earning his BS in Business Administration in 1953. After his graduation, Jim served in the U.S. Army as an Intelligence Officer, graduating from the Counterintelligence Corps School in 1954. He then was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany for 3 years, where he married Winifred in 1955 and they had their first son, Paul.

Jim worked as a home builder after his years of military service, building the family home in Rehoboth that he and Wini resided in all their lives. After his time as a builder, Jim served as the Business Administrator for the Dighton Rehoboth Regional School District for 20 years. During his retirement he continued to be a talented carpenter; always busy with his home projects or assisting his children in their own. He was a voracious reader, especially of World War ll history. Jim loved to travel domestically to visit his children and their families. Most of all Jim loved his large family and was always interested in what was happening in their lives. He and Wini began camping in Vermont over fifty years ago and all of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren continue this tradition every summer at the same campground.

Jim is survived by his five children, Paul Horton (Janice) of Benson, VT; Avis Cannon (Peter) of North Dighton, MA; Dave Horton MD (Elke) of Everett, PA; Zoe Conlon (James) of North Dighton, MA; and Jake Horton (Susan) of Wilmington, NC; his brother-in-law Lawson Harris PhD, his twenty grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many wonderful neighbors and dear friends. Jim was predeceased by his brothers Paull S. Horton and Leslie W. Horton.

The family acknowledges Compassionate Care Hospice and their wonderful staff. The family would also like to thank Nathan, Fabi, and Suenia for the care and compassion they gave to Jim.
