Upcoming Virtual Talk Addresses Drought in Massachusetts and How You Can Help

Posted

Cambridge - Local nonprofit Biodiversity for a Livable Climate is hosting a free virtual talk on local drought conditions at 12:00 noon ET on Tuesday, July 12 in partnership with the GBH Forum Network.

Drought warnings in Massachusetts are a stark reminder that we are part of a global climate system where warming trends are accelerating. In this latest installment of the Life Saves the Planet lecture series produced by Biodiversity for a Livable Climate and GBH Forum Network, a panel of three environmental experts will outline what we can learn from adding a global lens to our local and regional drought mitigation efforts.

Danielle Dolan, Deputy Director of the Mass Rivers Alliance, and Beth Lambert, Director of the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration, will join Slovakian hydrologist and Goldman Environmental Prize winner Michal Kravčík in a conversation about our connection to the global water crisis. Dr. Kravčík will introduce the new water paradigm, which explains the role of small water cycles and the importance of restoring them in urban, agricultural and forest settings to prevent drought and floods, and to cool the planet.

“When people degrade vegetation and soil, we destroy local water cycles, leading to less rain in a region. The destruction of vegetation and soil also diminishes the land’s ability to absorb rainwater, which accelerates runoff, erosion, flooding risk, and further depletes our aquifers and reservoirs of water. The good news is that this can be reversed,” says Kravčík. His experience with river restoration and dam removal will also add to our mitigation efforts in Massachusetts.

This free event will take place on Zoom. Those interested can learn more and register here: https://wgbh.zoom.us/webinar/register/6816561072722/WN_7WF-yRkVQvKNwc5HsiXtWA

Biodiversity for a Livable Climate is a non-profit changing the mainstream climate conversation by demonstrating the power of ecosystem restoration to cool local communities and the planet. Everyone has a role to play. Watch our videos on the power of eco-restoration and learn more about the water cycle. Inquiries welcome.
