Riverside Middle School Takes Both Games in Mayor's Cup

Posted

Riverside Middle School won both boys and girls games in the annual Mayor's Cup baseball and softball games played Monday at East Providence High School. The Riverside girls softball team scored an easy 11-0 win over Martin Middle School, while the Riverside boys baseball team had an exciting 2-1 extra inning win over Martin. The softball Vikings scored early and often in a dominating performance over their friendly rivals from Martin. The boys game was a different story. Riverside scored first in the third inning and held a 1-0 lead until Martin scored a run in the fifth. The score remained tied at 1 until the bottom of the eighth inning. Both teams had bases loaded near the end of the game but couldn't score until the Vikings broke through in the eighth on a passed ball for the win. The Vikings turned around last year's 1-0 loss the Martin with the 2-1 2024 win. Both teams played well in the tightly played game before a big crowd at East Providence High School.

Alex Enright scored the first RMS run in the third on a double by Chris Charbonneau. After Martin tied the game in the top of the fifth, it remained scoreless until the bottom of the eighth. The Vikings had an opportunity in the seventh but left the bases loaded. In the bottom of the eighth, Damian Duarte walked and then stole second base. Jake Iacavone bunted Duarte to third. On a passed ball, Duarte came home with the winning run. Jamison Sydney pitched a strong game for Martin and Jonathan Renaud pitched well for the Vikings with 12 strikeouts. Chris Charbonneau was sharp in relief for RMS. Both teams continue on in league play with an eye on the playoffs.
