Summer Kick-Off Week At Seekonk Library

"A Universe of Stories" is this year's theme for our summer reading challenge and summer learning programs. Start off the summer with a week of kick off events including rocket building and launching! And then enjoy other fun and educational activities throughout the week.

Rocket Building Workshop Saturday June 8, 1 – 3 pm
Build and launch rockets in Seekonk Meadows. On June 8 we'll build and June 15 will be the launch day. Participants will be guided by Major Donald Morrison of the Civil Air Patrol.This program is for ages 8 and up. Parental participation required for children under 11. Registration required.

Sensory Storytime Saturday, June 8, 11 am
This monthly storytime is suitable for all children but may be of particular interest for children who are on the Autism Spectrum or who have sensory challenges. The program features picture schedules, stories with movement, music, bubbles, fidgets for children to hold, sensory activities. Drop in.

Summer Kick-Off Night, Wednesday, June 12, 5 – 7 pm
Kick Off this summer’s reading theme, “A Universe of Stories” with Miss Sharon and Miss Amy There will be special summer activity stations…and ice cream! Together we’ll create and paint a unique planet to hang in the Children's Room. We'll need lots of planets to hang so bring a friend! We will also stamp rocks and use paint pens to color them in. The completed rocks will go in our "Kindness Rocks" Garden. Let's help create a "Universe of Kindness" right from the Library's garden Not enough fun yet? Then have your picture taken in our "Universe of Stories" photo booth. Try on an 'astronaut helmet' and hear a message from Mission Control. *Ice Cream! And yes, there will be ice cream! Please register for Kick Off Night so we have enough supplies and ice cream for everyone.

Also that night, anyone whoever hasn’t already signed up for Summer Reading Challenge can stop at our registration table and register. Our community goal is 35,000 minutes between June 1 and August 10. Together, we can do it! Read and keep track of time spent reading. This program features free books, digital badges, and free raffle tickets every time you visit. This year there will be over 25 raffle prizes.

Pokanoket Tribe Visits Seekonk Meadows
Thursday, June 13, 3 – 4 pm

Members of The Pokanoket will share a brief history of the Tribe and tell Tribal stories which have been passed down for generations.The visit will include Tribal regalia, artifacts to touch, drumming, dancing and a beading craft for children. “Children will learn all about the tribe of the Massasoit Osamequin who met the Pilgrims in Plymouth in 1621 and who ensured the Pilgrims' survival in the New World. A culturally-rich event that focuses on the "sharing of culture." Meet in the Meadows. In case of rain, meet in the Library. Registration preferred for planning purposes but drop-ins are always welcome.


Farm Animals Traveling Pet Zoo
Friday June 14, 1 – 2:30 pm

Farm Visits of Swansea will be coming to Seekonk Library with friendly baby barn animals. There will be approximately 20 babies including piglets, kid goats, bunnies, kittens, chicks and ducklings for a hands-on, fun and educational activity.

Rocket Launch
Saturday, June 15 10 – 11:30 am

The public is invited to view rocket launching in the Meadows behind Seekonk Library. Participants in our Model Rocket Making Workshop (June 8) have each built a rocket or two and the launch date is June 15, weather permitting. Bring a chair and enjoy the science and excitement of students launching their rockets. Facilitated by Major Don Morrison of the Civil Air Patrol and Civil Air Patrol Cadets. This program is sponsored by the Civil Air Patrol and their Model Rocketry Program.
