Soccer Fields at Gallishaw School to be Named in Honor of Neil Abelson

Posted

The Soccer Fields at the Gallishaw School in Seekonk will be named in honor of the late Neil Abelson, who had spent several years working in town government.

Abelson, who passed away in 2024, served as a member of the Planning Board for 15 years and a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for three years. He also served as the town’s Building Inspector and Zoning Enforcement Officer for eight years.

Abelson was also a 35 year member of the Seekonk Lions Club.

“But most importantly, Neil’s steadfast commitment to the Seekonk Youth Soccer League included over 20 years, starting with his son Kyle, guiding youth teams in Seekonk, coaching and mentoring the traveling Black Goose team,” Paul Buckley told the School Committee at their August 3 meeting.

The Select Board approved the naming of the fields in Abelson’s honor at their July 8 meeting.

Board Chair Gary Sagar praised Abelson’s work in helping mentor the soccer players over the years.

Sagar explained Abelson was the co-chair of the Building Committee when Seekonk High School was renovated in 2000. “It’s a very deserving honor, I think,” Sagar said.

The renaming ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 13.
