The Riverside Middle School Boys basketball team has advanced to the championship game of the Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Winter Tournament. The 5th seed Vikings will take on 3rd seed Seekonk MS for the title, today, Sunday February 5th at 5 PM. The two-day tournament is being held at the Hurley Middle School in Seekonk, Mass. Also participating in the HMS tournament are the RMS girls and the Martin MS boys’ and girls' teams.

On Saturday (2/4/23) the RMS boys avenged their Mayor’s Cup loss to Martin at East Providence High School the night before, by beating MMS this time, 31-23. RMS and MMS had to play the early Saturday 8 AM game in Seekonk, after playing each other several hours earlier at EPHS. In that 1st annual EP Mayor’s Cup game on Friday, Martin handled Riverside easily in a 45-39 win before a packed Townie gym. The temperature outside was below zero but inside action heated up quickly. Earlier in the season, it was RMS who defeated MMS in this long-standing intra-city rivalry. Also, on Friday evening, the RMS girls basketball team had no trouble defeating the Martin girls, 44-18.

At the Seekonk tournament, 4th seed Martin and 5th seed Riverside returned to play in a field of teams including middle schools from Seekonk, Rehoboth, Freetown-Lakeville, Somerset and Tiverton. The Martin-Riverside boys game early Saturday morning stayed close for awhile until RMS pulled away for the 31-23 win. Riverside’s 6’ 6” center Jayden Fernandes continues to improve as he blocked key shots and played a key game. The rest of the team showed a balanced effort for the win. Martin played well but couldn’t catch up to the Vikings on this day. Riverside then played again at 10 AM against the #1 tourney seed, Freetown-Lakeville. The Vikings came out scoring quickly and never really trailed to the higher seeded Lakeville team. Again, the Vikings defense quieted the Lakeville scorers and the RMS offense, sparked by spirited play from Aidan Martins kept the team in control, gaining a convincing 42-39 win. RMS boys will play for the tourney championship against the #3 seed Seekonk at 5 PM.

As of this writing details aren’t complete on the other local teams but Martin girls played this morning and finished the tourney with a 1-2 record, looking respectable. On Saturday the Riverside girls defeated Rehoboth 45-25 in a dominating performance. RMS played a tight defense keeping Rehoboth from the basket and the Vikings rarely missed shots as coach Katie Kenahan frequently substituted players throughout the game. The now one-loss RMS girls are currently playing (1:35 pm) for 3rd place in the tournament. The Martin boys also have finished tournament play and have impressed.

Hurley Middle school is directly on Route 152, just minutes from all of East Providence. Time to get to the girls game and stay for the boys title game at 5 PM!
