Riverside Bussing

Posted

Recently the E. Providence School Department has seen fit to cut bus service to around 100 families of elementary school aged children in the Riverside area. In my case they feel it would be ok for my 5 year old son to walk to school because he is within 1 mile of the school. Besides the obvious danger of small children crossing busy streets there is the added danger of small children passing by strangers houses on the same route at the same time every day. If the other 100 or so families affected by this are like our family, before and after school care is a big financial burden, especially when I have a babysitter who can care for my children after school but does not drive. While cutting bus service to these families the City of East Providence is continuing to provide bussing to out of town private schools. Also, my high school age child is being provided bus service. His public school bus stop is at a RIPTA stop on a route that stops at the high school. Why are we cutting bus service to elementary school children yet providing bus service to high school aged children on a RIPTA bus route? My call to the Superintendant was not returned and instead given to the director of transportation. I’ve already talked to him and been told there is nothing that can be done. If you are one of the families affected by this decision, please, pick up your phone and make yourself heard.M. Clark
