Years ago, a telegram came,
Breaking the hearts of a mother and dad,
Their son killed in action over in France,
The one, only child that they had;
A Korean Veteran was honored,
Shot down at age twenty-one,
His young widow cries at his gravesite,
To the sound ot discharging guns;
A four old boy, his dad killed in Vietnam,
Won’t have his dad through the years as he grows,
He bravely salutes the flag-covered coffin,
While in the stillness, a bugler’s “Taps” blows;
She’s only thirteen with a floral bouquet,
For a brother lost in Desert Storm,
He was her hero, he always was there,
For a sister who now feels forlorn;
It’s Memorial Day and a large family gathers,
To honor a Nurse who never came back,
She was so proud of the service she gave,
In the heat and the sands of Iraq;
A young man stands apart from the others,
He’s doing the best that he can,
At the military service for a good friend,
Whose life ended in Afghanistan;
Down through the years our country has lost,
Countless heroes who were family or friends,
Their sacrifice, totally selfless,
The fight for freedom seems never to end;
Today is a day to remember,
Our Fallen with grateful thanksgiving,
Because of these Veterans, we remain free,
We owe them the lives we are living;
And, as we remember them this Memorial Day,
Let’s also ask God to be kind,
Though we’ll never forget all the Veterans who died,
Remember, too, loved ones they left behind.-
