New Wheaton chamber ensemble plans kids concert

Posted

A Wheaton College chamber music ensemble will perform a special concert for children, featuring a famous suite of compositions in which the music mimics the character of a zoo full of animals.

The 12-member Wheaton Sinfonietta will perform “The Carnival of the Animals,” written by 19th century composer Camille Saint-Saëns, at 11 a.m. in the Community Room of the Norton Public Library on Saturday, Nov. 16. The performance, which is appropriate for children of all ages, is free and open to the public.

The Carnival of the Animals suite features movements that represent a variety of animals, from lions, kangaroos and elephants to hens, roosters and donkeys. The work includes one of Saint-Saens most well-known pieces, “The Swan”

In addition to the music, students in the ensemble will share activities, poetry and coloring sheets related to the performance with the audience.

The Wheaton Sinfonietta is a new chamber music ensemble that is organized and managed collaboratively by the student performers under the direction of Wheaton College Associate Professor of Music Delvyn Case. Students selected for the ensemble are chosen for their advanced performance capabilities, and they earn college credit for their work in performing and managing the group.
