Hornbine School Museum Open Houses

Posted

The Hornbine School Museum will be open on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month during August and September from 2 – 4 P.M. unless we have to close because of repairs. Look on Facebook (Search for Hornbine School Museum) for updates.

Young visitors to the museum will have the opportunity to write on slates with a slate pencil. We have several large wall slate boards that were installed during the 1920s. We also have a large slate board on display that came from the “Oak Swamp School”, a Rehoboth one room school which no longer exists.

But, by far, our most interesting “Black Board” is at the front of the building the size of a 3' by 8' sheet of plywood. This black board is NOT a sheet of plywood and it is NOT made from slate. It is actually one wide plank of wood painted black! The plank was used for instruction with chalk during the 19th and 20th centuries.

During the mid to late 20th century, a new form of chalk board came into use. They were sheets of plywood painted green. In the 21st century, white boards came into use. They are made from a white plastic and markers, rather than chalk, are used to write on them. Now, many schools have “screens” used with computers for instruction.

Come visit us at 144 Hornbine Road and see many other interesting instructional materials.
