East Providence Teen to Compete at Miss Rhode Island’s Teen America Pageant

Posted

Seventeen-year-old Maya Satterlee of East Providence has been crowned Miss East Providence’s Teen, a local title within the Miss Rhode Island’s Teen America Organization, part of the Miss Teen America system. With this title, Satterlee will go on to compete for the title of Miss Rhode Island’s Teen America. If crowned, she will represent Rhode Island at the national Miss Teen America competition.

Currently a junior in high school, Satterlee is passionate about using her title to raise awareness about fashion sustainability, an issue she discovered through her studies in fashion design.

“Fashion has given me the confidence to express myself,” said Satterlee. “But I’ve also seen the rise of fast fashion and the pressure people feel to constantly keep up with trends. I want to help educate others about how overconsumption impacts our planet and encourage more mindful choices in the way we shop and wear clothing.”

Through her community service initiative, Maya works to promote more sustainable fashion habits. She has partnered with the Creative Reuse Center of Rhode Island to encourage the use of reused creative materials and helped host a clothing swap with The Nest in Providence.

She also spoke to over hundreds of students at her high school’s fashion show about sustainability in the fashion industry. Satterlee’s dedication to fashion has also earned her academic opportunities. She was awarded a scholarship to attend summer seminars at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she studied fashion marketing and textile fibers.

Outside of pageants, Satterlee is active in her school and community. She is a member of her school’s cross-country team and participates in DECA, an international organization that prepares emerging leaders in marketing and business. She has also studied Spanish for the past four years and hopes to become fluent.

In addition, Satterlee has volunteered with National Alliance on Mental Illness during its annual mental health walk and had the honor of showcasing her designs at Rhode Island Fashion Week.

By winning the title of Miss East Providence’s Teen, Satterlee will spend the year representing her community and advocating for the causes she is most passionate about.
