Continuation of State Grant and New Program for Young Adults

East Bay Regional Coalition Awarded 2nd Year of State Opioid Response Grant

Posted

Barrington, RI— On October 1st, 2023, the East Bay Regional Coalition (EBRC) will start its 2nd year of the State Opioid Response grant through RI Department of Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. During year 1, Sean Palumbo of Bristol washired as the Project Coordinator. Palumbo worked with regional directors Denise Alves and Kristen Westmoreland to implement the InShape program and the April and October 2023 Drug Take Back days.

The EBRC has been facilitating InShape classes, an evidence-based program by Prevention Plus Wellness LLC in the East Bay since April 2023. Young adults who are motivated and have purpose in life are less likely to misuse substances. The program offers those aged 18-25 the opportunity to sit down with the facilitator for a short presentation on how substance use can negatively affect a physically and mentally active lifestyle. The bulk of the program is focused on creating an individual goal plan and contract to self-evaluate any substance use as well as current and future plans to be physically and mentally active. The end of the class addresses current issues related to opioids and the dangers of sharing or taking medications that are not prescribed to you.
