Job Overview
Newman Church in Rumford, Rhode Island is seeking a detail-oriented Church Sexton to join our team. This person is responsible for the general upkeep of the church property (including a beautiful historic sanctuary, large function hall, non-profit food pantry, commercial kitchen, and meeting/classroom spaces) and setting up for church groups and tenants. The Church Sexton is both a skilled maintenance person and a community ambassador for the church.

Job Responsibilities

Church Opening/Closing:
• Check church calendar to stay up to date on all functions scheduled in the church.
• Before church use: arrange facilities, chairs, and tables as required. Unlock doors. In colder months, set thermostats as needed for incoming groups.
• After church use: clean the areas used and lock doors.

Daily Tasks:
• Walk through the building to monitor spaces. Clean as needed with special attention to bathrooms and trash receptacles.
• In colder months, monitor the church boiler system; check the sight glass to ensure that there is enough water in the tank and adjust appropriately.

Weekly Tasks:
• Vacuum all used office spaces, classrooms, and food pantry.
• Sweep and mop: Memorial Hall, kitchen, office hallway, and bathrooms, hallways, bathrooms, entryways, and stairs.
• Clean kitchen: wipe counters and all stainless-steel surfaces including refrigerator, sinks, and workspaces; perform the three required maintenance actions listed on top of the greaser (empty grease collector, empty solids strainer basket, clean blue grease trap).
• Clean and re-stock bathrooms.
• Trash removed to outdoor dumpster.
• Dust windowsills, sanctuary, and stairwells.
• Before Sunday: clean the sanctuary including vacuuming the alter area in anticipation of Sunday morning worship service.
• On Sunday: check the East Providence recycling calendar for the bi-weekly schedule and place the blue recycle bins at the curb for the assigned Monday pickup.
Periodic Tasks:
• Clean windows (spring and fall).
• Minor painting and maintenance projects.
• Maintain the St. Pauly’s donation shed in the church parking lot: inspect the lights, locks, donation bin, and structure; inspect and organize the donation bag contents.
• Meet with vendors and service specialists to coordinate access for them to perform work in the building (e.g., heating, plumbers, electricians, etc.).
• Summer and fall: summer maintenance projects as arranged with the Trustees.
• Winter and Spring: Check on building following inclement weather.
Special Events (weddings & funerals)
• The Church Sexton is expected to occasionally work during extra functions of the church that are outside our regular events. Payment for additional sexton services will be made directly to the Sexton.
Sunday Mornings:
• Open the church no later than 8:30 a.m. before the 10 a.m. service.
• Lock the church after the service and coffee hour has concluded.
Perform other activities common to custodial positions that may not have been included above.
Physical Qualifications
• Be able to climb stairs to access supplies, attic storage, and sanctuary balcony.
• Be able to lift thirty pounds.
• Be able to climb a ten-foot ladder.
• Be able to work inside and outside in varying climates.
Expected Hours: 16 hours/week
• Monday: 4pm to 7pm
• Wednesday: 4pm to 7pm
• Thursday: 4pm to 7pm
• Either Friday or Saturday: 4pm to 7pm
• Sunday: 8:30am to 12:30pm

Attributes of a Successful Sexton
• Has maintenance skills.
• A good communicator: ability to carry out written instructions and maintain a record of completed work.
• Ability to safely handle power tools, as well as cleaning chemicals and supplies.
• A responsible and dependable person, capable of taking initiative and willing to learn new tasks.
• Ability to recognize facilities problems as they arise, define them, fix them if possible, or work with appropriate people to determine what needs to be done by outside contractors.
• A team player who maintains positive relationships with staff and community members.
