A Week of Events Celebrating the Joy of Literacy

Attleboro, Massachusetts, August 22, 2023 - The Literacy Center (TLC) is excited to announce a series of engaging and informative events taking place from August 28th to September 9th. These events are designed to celebrate the joy of literacy throughout the world, foster community engagement, and promote a deeper understanding of important issues. From interactive games to thought-provoking discussions, TLC invites everyone to participate and make a positive impact.

Event Highlights:

1. Literacy Bingo (August 28th - September 7th)
Join our Literacy Bingo challenge and stand a chance to win exciting prizes. Starting August 28th at 9am, pick up your bingo card from our website or in-person at TLC. Complete the activities on the bingo card until September 7th at 10am. Prizes will be awarded at the “Literacy Love!” Open House on September 7th at The Literacy Center, located at 80 N. 2. Community Storytelling Event (September 5th, 6:30pm - 8pm)
Gather around for an enchanting evening of stories at our third annual Community Storytelling Event. This family-friendly event will explore the theme of “The Stories that Changed My Life”. Up to 8 storytellers will captivate you with their original pieces or selections that align with the theme. Join us over Zoom with your dinner or a cup of tea for an engaging and entertaining experience. RSVP to receive a link to the event by going to www.theliteracycenter.com/storytelling 

We welcome submissions from the community! To join us as a storyteller, please email your name, phone number, and a copy of the piece that you intend to read/perform to Evan Dardano, Director of Student Services at The Literacy Center, at edardano@theliteracycenter.com  by August 29th.

3. Immigration in Massachusetts: A Panel Discussion (September 6th, 6pm - 8pm @Attleboro Public Library)
Delve into the complexities of immigration in America at this enlightening panel discussion. Expert panelists John J. McCarthy (USCIS), James Richardson (Project Citizenship), and Meagan Hecht (Justice Institute), will shed light on the migrant crisis in the state and share insights into pathways for immigrants to come to the United States, receive visas, and pursue citizenship. Join us at the Attleboro Public Library for an informative evening. Please note, this discussion will not include a forum for debate.

4. Literacy Love: Open House & Coffee Hour (September 7th, 10am - 11:30am @The Literacy Center)
Experience the warmth of literacy camaraderie at our Open House and Coffee Hour. Join TLC staff, volunteers, and students for a morning cup of coffee, pastries, and literary discussions. Bring your favorite book or literary work and engage with fellow book enthusiasts. Also, Bingo players can redeem their bingo cards and collect prizes during this event.

5. International Literacy Day (September 8th, All Day)
Join us online via Instagram, Facebook, and our website to celebrate International Literacy Day. Throughout the day, we'll share videos, stories, and insights about literacy from around the world. Help us reach our fundraising goal of $5,000 to support our literacy classes and programs by donating at www.theliteracycenter.com/donate

6. Family Literacy Picnic (September 9th, 11am @Balfour Park)
Bring your loved ones and join us at the Balfour Riverwalk Park for a delightful Family Literacy Picnic. Enjoy quality time together with engaging literacy activities, storytelling, and more.
