A Rehoboth Flag Contest

Posted

A year ago, the Director of Veteran Services office was asked about getting a Rehoboth flag for the Bristol County Agricultural High School since they had a flag from every town except for Rehoboth. At that time, only two flags existed. One flag was at the statehouse in Boston, and the other flag was kept in the vault at town hall.

Since the Veterans office oversees the maintenance and replacement of the American flags around town at the public buildings, all of the Veteran American flags in the cemeteries along with the Fire Fighters flags in Rehoboth.

Plus, for the past five years the Veterans office started placing on the utility poles the American flags along Bay State Road from the beginning to the ending of the parade route, from the American Legion Post 302 to the Veterans Memorial at the corner of Bay State Road and US 44.

Also, for a number of years, the Sons of the American Legion Post 302 would put up the state flags at Redway Plain for the towns annual Harvest Festival Event that would be conducted in September. Since that event was dissolved a few years ago, the past two years, the Veterans office has placed the state flags around the Veterans Memorial which has maintained and helped enhance pride for the residents of Rehoboth.

The Veterans office approached the Selectman back in the fall of 2025, asking the Selectman for their approval to move forward on having a contest for redesigning a new flag for our town of Rehoboth.

The only flag Rehoboth has ever had was created during Rehoboth 350th Anniversary event in 1963.

There are now currently four town flags, one that has been at the statehouse for the past 56 years, one is kept in the town vault and two new ones we're generated, with on being given to Bristol County Agricultural High School and the fourth one it's currently at the veteran's office.

Having a conversation with the clerk's office, the contest for approval by the taxpayers of Rehoboth can be conducted during a town meeting in the fall by using the clickers. So, we can have 10, or 30 or 50 contestants and everyone would be able to vote for their choice.

The deadline has been set for the 4th of July in 2027 as the deadline and to be voted on in the fall at the fall Special Town Meeting

All inquiries will come through the Director of Veteran Services office telephone number 508-252-4467, or you can e-mail veterans@rehobothma.gov and put in the “subject” Rehoboth flag.
