Taunton Civic Chorus Opens a New Season with New Leadership

Posted

When the baton is raised on the Fall season, Taunton Civic Chorus will have a new Music Director and Assistant Music Director/Accompanist.

New Director Christopher Hoskins is not a stranger to TCC. For the past two seasons, Hoskins served as the Assistant Music Director and Accompanist. He is elated with his new position.

“Having the chance to lead such a group brings me much pride,” said Hoskins. “I am grateful for the opportunity to share my musicianship and my passion for conducting with TCC.”

In his new role, Hoskins sees the chorus continuing to provide an entertaining and uplifting performance, but he would like to see singers “dive deeper into the reasons why we sing in the first place, which means picking repertoires that better represent our emotional connection to music, as well as more musically complex titles.”

Hoskins has been a musician “for as long as a I can remember.” He will be a Senior this Fall at Rhode Island College majoring in Music Education with a double concentration in saxophone and voice.

Hoskins assistant, Jameson “JJ” Ward, will also be a Senior at Rhode Island College majoring in Music Education. Ward was thrilled to get a job where he can put into practice the teaching skills he’s learned.

“This is a chorus that cares about its craft, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that,” said Ward. “An accompanist’s ability can make or break a choir, and it’s my role to do as much as I can to help the singers make the best sound they can.”

Ward said he wants to make music more fun in his new role, while performing at a high level. He wants to create an atmosphere where people look forward to coming to rehearsal, rather than dreading it, and knowing they’ll be coming to a rehearsal where they’re going to be accepted for who they are, with whatever ability they have.

The new season begins Thursday, August 25th; open rehearsals will continue for the next four weeks for prospective singers to check out the Taunton area’s longest running chorus. Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm at the Berkley Congregational Church, 13 South Main St., Berkley.

Hoskins said TCC welcomes new members, whether they be high school musicians, young adults, singers who want to get back in the game, or those without any previous experience.
