Taunton Civic Chorus Awards Scholarships

Posted

Taunton Civic Chorus has awarded scholarships to two area students. Each year, TCC awards a scholarship to a young person entering college who has been involved in the performing arts in high school.

Lauren DeCoste recently graduated from Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School where she has held leadership roles in student government and music. At D-R, Lauren was a saxophonist in the marching band, and she played the flute, clarinet and saxophone in the chamber ensemble. She played outside of school as well, in such musical groups as The Rhode Island Wind Ensemble.

During the Pandemic, she took a difficult situation of not being able to meet with band members in person, and turned it into “a time for our section to grow stronger and closer” through Zoom meetings. For her efforts, Lauren received The Instrumentalist Magazine Merit Leadership Award, as well as the Musicianship Award for demonstrating “skills, responsibility, and dedication.”

This Fall, she plans on attending Coastal Carolina University where she has been accepted into the Honors College, majoring in Music Education (Instrumental).

Lauren is the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth DeCoste of Rehoboth.

Alexandra Parent graduated from Apponequet Regional High School. In high school, Alex took dual enrollment classes - American Sign Language, Abnormal Psychology, Sociology and Biology at Bristol Community College. She is the recipient of the AP Scholar with Honor Award, National School Choral Award, and Follett Merit Scholarship.

Musically, Alex was a member of the jazz ensemble, marching band as a drum major, select choir, and Apponequet Players. With no musical performances to prep for, the Pandemic afforded more time for Alex to focus on technical skills both vocal and instrumental. During that time, she noticed the resilience of the musical community – “still performing even when it seemed impossible.” Alex plans to major in Environmental Science at McGill University.

A resident of Lakeville, she is the daughter of James and Patricia Parent.

Taunton Civic Chorus, founded in 1959, is the longest running choral group in the Greater Taunton area.
