Audubon Offers Over 20 Nature Explorations in June June 2021 Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

(May 3, 2021) – Start your summer off right – in the great outdoors! Join an Audubon guide to search for wildlife on the water, learn all about edible plants found in nature, and discover some of the amazing birds, bats, and insects that thrive in the Ocean State. It’s a busy time at Audubon – come join the fun!

Rhode Island COVID-19 safety guidelines will be followed for all programs. Small groups are led by Audubon naturalists. Family units are encouraged to participate together. Masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required. Visit the events calendar at www.asri.org  for safety guidelines and to register.

Audubon offers small-group Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with naturalist Laura Carberry. Each week a new birding destination will be chosen. Face masks and social distancing are required. Join Audubon birding expert Laura Carberry and Denise Poyer, formerly from the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association, for a morning of kayaking and birding! Get out on the water and explore Frying Pan Pond in search of wetland birds. Kayaking is the perfect way to explore wetland habitats and search for Cedar Waxwings, Baltimore Orioles, Osprey and more! Register early as the program is limited to 8 people. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks. Advance registration is required.

White Barn Story Time: Escargot

Come to the big barn at Caratunk for special story time that focuses on nature! Enjoy Escargot by Dashka Slater about a cute and determined snail as he adventures up a picnic table for a delicious salad! After the story discover different types of snail shells, casings, and eggs, then walk in the field or forest to look for these fascinating creatures. Face masks and social distancing are required. Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Thanks to Citizens Bank, the Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join us for nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. Face masks and social distancing are required. Participants must bring their own masks.
Please note that due to COVID safety guidelines, Audubon may need to limit the number of visitors inside the Nature Center and Aquarium at any one time. Families are encouraged to enjoy the outdoor trails, rose-pollinator garden, and boardwalk while they wait for entrance. Masks are required and we encourage smaller groups to visit for the safety of all.

11:00 am – Solar Eclipse: Learn about the upcoming solar eclipse on June 10, 2021. Why do eclipses happen? How often we are able to see them? How can you safely view one from your home? Bluebird Walk and Talk

Join Audubon for a summer series of nature walks for families with preschoolers. Have fun with a forest seek and find, play some forest games, and discover the sounds of nature in the forest. Textile Recycling Program

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is once again partnering with Goodwill Industries to host a textile recycling event. Clothes, shoes, towels and other fabrics welcomed! Drop off your goods to be recycled at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol. No need to call or register in advance. A list of accepted items is listed below. Textile items may be ripped, stained, or worn out…so long as they are clean and odor-free!

Please note: Audubon staff will not be available to assist in unloading items to be recycled from vehicles and carrying them into the Center. Participants must be able to carry items on their own. Please call with questions: 401-245-7500.
Accepted: shoes (even singles), clothing, linens, bedding, towels, blankets, curtains, belts, purses. Not accepted: electronics, household appliances, batteries, toys/plastics.

Bird Banding with Audubon

Join Audubon for a bird banding demonstration in which experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to gather data on their movements. Birds will be gently removed from tall “mist nets” set in Audubon’s shrubby habitats. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed. Bring a camera and binoculars. Please register early. Face masks and social distancing are required. Edible Wild Plants Walk

The East Bay region is home to over 90 species of edible wild plants, some of which are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. These include native species like Spicebush and Sassafras and edible weeds like Purslane and Chicory. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of “Wild Plants I Have Known...and Eaten,” on an evening ramble through the Audubon wildlife refuge to learn about edible plant species. Come discover the world of pollinators with Dr. Rob Gegear, biology professor at UMass Dartmouth. This workshop will focus on pollination system diversity rather than pollinator abundance. Participants will leave with the knowledge and skills to assess the quality of habitats in gardens, parks and conservation lands for biodiversity conservation. Counting the Birds of the Four Seasons
Art Exhibit by Amy Veldman-Wilson

Block Island resident Amy Veldman-Wilson has featured birds in her art for over 10 years. The Island offers a wide variety of bird species, from shorebirds to birds of prey as well as song birds and dabblers. She has spent many hours observing and photographing birds, whether in her back yard or by the sea. The artist works in a variety of mediums, capturing birds in connection to their environment. Amy’s art has been selected for international exhibitions and awards, and her daughter Maya Veldman-Wilson will also display her bird photography in the exhibit.
