Seekonk Troop 1 and Troop 9 Scouts had a busy month of adventures, community service, and recognition for their commitment to Seekonk and to Scouting.
Several Seekonk Troop 1 Scouts completed a 7-mile bike ride at the World War II Veterans Memorial Trail/Norton Rail-Trail in Norton, MA as part of their Cycling Merit Badge. During the ride, Scouts observed different species of birds, plants, and animals. During this trip, Scouts demonstrated their bicycle maintenance skills.
Troop 1 and Troop 9 Scouts were on hand at T.F. Green Airport to welcome home local Veterans following a recent Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. Three adult leaders of Troop 1 and Troop 9 were recognized by the Narragansett Council with the Golden Spark Plug Award. The Golden Spark Plug is awarded to volunteers who bring energy, initiative, and behind-the-scenes efforts to make scouting programs fun, exciting, and successful. The Seekonk Land Conservation Trust awarded Troop 1 and Troop 9 Scouts with the Mary C. Wilson Community Conservation Award. Several Scouts and adult leaders were on hand to receive the award. The award is in recognition of outstanding contributions to the natural resources and land in Seekonk. Scouts held their first fundraising car wash of the year. First Home Mortgage located on Central Avenue; Seekonk provided their parking lot to the Scouts for the car wash.
Seekonk Scouts placed new American flags on the graves of veterans throughout Seekonk in preparation for Memorial Day. Troop 1 and Troop 9 Scouts marched in Seekonk’s Memorial Day Parade. During the parade Scouts stopped to salute the memorial flag of Ensign Arthur B. Monroe. Ensign Monroe was a Seekonk resident, World War II U.S. Navy serviceman, and a Troop 1 Eagle Scout Killed in Action on March 25, 1945, in the Atlantic.
Scouts ended the month with a weekend camping trip to Limerick, Maine. Scouts had a very active camping trip with plenty of activities including fishing, water sports, campfires, games, and an outdoor movie night. Experienced Scouts spent one night camping on an island. Scouts worked together to transport their equipment to the island and establish a second campsite.
