The 2026-2027 Seekonk school year began on Wednesday for Grades 1 through 12. The first day of kindergarten is September 3.

Superintendent Rebecca Kidwell has announced new staff additions, including Anthony Simmons as the new Director of Guidance and counselor for all ninth grade students at Seekonk High School.

“Lauren Facenda (Martin Elementary) and Derek Texeira (Hurley Middle School) are joining the district as Assistant Principals.  Angelena Pires will return to her athletic trainer work as the Assistant Coordinator of Athletics & Aquatics.”

A new gymnasium floor at the high school is nearing completion.

“The painting is complete, and we're in the process of installing the rubber floor edging that will both provide safety for athletes and protect the wood area from environmental damage,” Kidwell explained. “We are in progress on updating door locks to classrooms and have completed the appointment of our architects of record.  Those appointments will allow us to move forward with the HVAC updates to the high school pool.”

The school year also brings some curriculum changes.

“The most exciting new courses at Seekonk High School include launching our first of new Innovation Career Pathways in Clean Energy and Business & Finance,” Kidwell noted. “Some courses in these pathways and some additional courses in Law and mathematics will be offered as dual enrollment courses with Roger Williams University, where students can take the class with an SHS teacher and earn Roger Williams University credit at a discounted rate.  We also have dual enrollment offerings with Rhode Island College.”

The school schedules remain unchanged.

“There are no parking or activity fees,” Kidwell added. “Transportation fees have increased slightly (from $150 to $180 for elementary students who live closest to the school buildings and all students in grades 7-12).  This is our first year of reinstituting a flat, year long athletic fee of $200 per athlete for middle school and high school interscholastic sports.  One fee covers as many seasons as the student chooses to play (fall, winter, and spring).”
