Seekonk Memorial Day Ceremony

Posted

Town and state officials gathered at the Seekonk Veterans Memorial on May 23 to honor the members of our armed services.

In addition, the event also marked the 10th anniversary of the Memorial.

Doreen Taylor, speaking on behalf of the Friends of Seekonk Veterans Memorial Park, paid tribute to the Memorial Park Committee, which included David Viera, Robert DeFontes, David Sullivan, Vidal DeMedeiros, Joseph Velardo, Don Kinniburgh, James Robbins, Sean Healy, Francis Cordeiro, and Steven Arruda.

“It would not have been accomplished without the dedication and commitment of that team of individuals determined to see it through. This should really make the town of Seekonk proud. This Veterans Memorial Park has stood and will continue to stand as a place of reflection for those who did not make it home. I would like to acknowledge DPW (Department of Public Works). They have kept this park looking fantastic throughout the seasons and years. For this I say thank you to (Director) David Cabral and everyone at DPW for your time and continued support. There is one person I would like to recognize for his imagination, creativity, and all his hard work in keeping this memorial looking as perfect as perfect can be.”

Taylor presented a plaque to architect Mark Drapeau “who has watched over this park from day one with care.”

“He has also done it with respect, honor, and dignity for all our veterans,” Taylor continued. “I saw everybody who put their heart and soul into this. That committee was second to none. Everything was donated - time, heavy equipment, direct security, everything.”

“I’m not a veteran, I’ve never worn a uniform, and hats off to all of you who have,” Drapeau said. “I appreciate all your sacrifices. I’ve taken a lot of time to recognize and to appreciate everything that you veterans have done.”

Other speakers included James LaFlame, the Veterans Service Officer, Kevin Kugel from the Veterans Service Council, poet Margie Rieske, State Representative Steven Howitt, R-Seekonk, and Adam Tumlinson from the Seekonk Veterans Council, who read a proclamation from Governor Maura Healey.

The Benediction was delivered by Chaplain John Amaral.

The Seekonk High School Band performed the National Anthem and other music.
