Seekonk High Mourns Loss of Athletic Director

Posted

Seekonk High School is mourning the loss of their athletic director John Moran, who passed away on Friday.

Principal William Whalen shared this message with students, staff, and parents: “It is with great sadness that I share with you that Mr. John Moran, our Athletic Director and a teacher at Seekonk High School, has passed away after a long illness. Mr. Moran served as a teacher for the Seekonk Public Schools, at both Hurley Middle School and Seekonk High School, for over 20 years. He will be missed by our faculty, staff, and many Seekonk High School students and alumni.”

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of John E. Moran, a cherished member of our community, a beloved athletic director, and an educator for 25 years here in Seekonk,” School Superintendent Rebecca Kidwell wrote. “Mr. Moran dedicated his life to inspiring young minds and supporting student-athletes, both on and off the field. His passion for education and deep care for every student left an indelible mark on generations. Whether in the classroom, on the sidelines, or in the halls, he was a bright light, a mentor, and a friend to so many. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by his legacy.  May you find peace and joy in remembering the good times with him.”

“John was the best colleague to work with for over 12 years as Audio Visual Co-Coordinators,” Peter Hoogerzeil said. “We learned a lot from each other and we had a lot of fun broadcasting meetings, events, and shows with our students. But most importantly, I was honored to be his friend, and I, like many of my colleagues, will miss him dearly.”

Moran graduated from Pawtucket’s Tolman High School in 1980, where he was the star running back of the football team. He continued his education at NEIT, Warwick, where he studied video and radio production, ultimately earning a Master’s degree in athletic administration from Concordia University, Illinois.

Moran’s funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. from WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Teresa Church, 358 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Special Olympics Rhode Island - Pawtucket Pacers, 370 George Washington Hwy, Smithfield, RI 02917 would be appreciated.
