Seekonk Explores Options for Firefly Properties

Posted

Voters at Monday’s Fall Town Meeting will be asked to authorize the Board of Selectmen to sell the “Firefly Golf Course” property located at 320 Fall River Avenue, and 763 and 769 Arcade Avenue, consisting of approximately 55 acres of undeveloped land no longer needed by the Town.

The Town of Seekonk purchased those properties for $6.9 million after voters gave their approval at the November 2024 Town Meeting. The properties were owned by developer Charles Tapalian.

Select Board member Chris Zorra explained the properties might not be put up for sale.

“It’s about giving the Town options, to plan responsibly, stay flexible, and make decisions that serve Seekonk’s long-term needs and residents’ best interests,” Zorra said. “There’s been some interest from individuals and businesses looking to purchase the property, including an abutting business that has expressed interest in acquiring a small portion to expand and build on the community events they already offer. By requesting the authority to sell, the Select Board would simply have the flexibility to evaluate those opportunities and determine whether selling a portion, or potentially all, of the land would be in the Town’s best interest.”

“At the same time, the Board continues to look at how the property can best serve the community, whether that’s keeping it as open space, using it for recreation, or possibly as a location for a future middle or high school. We’re also considering the financial benefit: if a portion of the property were sold, the proceeds could be used to pay down existing debt and help provide some relief to taxpayers,” Zorra added.

Another article would authorize the Board of Selectmen to sell the property known as “Old Town Hall”, located at 624 Taunton Avenue. The building was used as the headquarters for the Police Department at one time.

An article would authorize the Board of Selectmen to sell the property known as “County Street Fire Station” located at 170 County Street.

The meeting will be held at 7 pm at Seekonk High School, 261 Arcade Avenue.
