News & Notes from the Blanding Library

Posted

Ancestry.com at Library
The Blanding has a new resource sure to be of interest to many. Now you can access the popular genealogy website Ancestry.com from inside the library. The Blanding is now subscribing to Ancestry-Library Edition, so people can search the Ancestry databases while at the library.  Remote access to Ancestry.com will be coming soon also. This will allow library patrons access the site from home or elsewhere. Ancestry.com will be making this service available through the end of 2021, due to the pandemic. So get out your library card and head to: https://ancestrylibrary.proquest.com. For more information, call the library at 508-252-4236.

Planning for Book Sale
As of this writing, the Friends of the Library hope to schedule a one-day book sale in mid-October. Look for more information to come, as the Blanding continues to monitor the current situation with Covid-19, in case any changes in plans and policies at the library be needed. Anyone wishing to donate books at the library should check with the folks at the front desk before dropping any donations in the hall or lobby.

Story Walk Continues
Stop by the library’s front garden to follow the library’s summer Story Walk, now on display through the month of September. Read author Mirra Ginsburg’s story “How the Sun Was Brought Back to the Sky’ with beautiful illustrations by Jose Aruego and Areane Dewey. This sunny story is brought to you by the Friends of the Blanding Library.

“Chalk the Walks”
Here’s a fun outdoor activity for all ages in September. When you come to the Blanding, pick up some colored chalk at the desk, and go decorate a square of the front walkways with your own design. We supply the chalk and you supply your imagination. Have fun!

Sign Up for Library Card
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, to mark the beginning of the school year. The American Library Association reminds everyone that libraries everywhere continue to play an important role in the education and development of children. Did you know that at the Blanding Library children are eligible to sign up for a library card when they turn 5 (with a parent or guardian’s signature)?  Children, as well as adults who don’t already have a card, are encouraged to sign up for a free library card at the Blanding.

Through September Miss Joyce and Miss Cathy will continue Tales on the Library Lawn combining stories, music and movement. Check the calendar on the Blanding’s website www.blandinglibrary.net for more information on this and other upcoming events.

New Books of Note
Fiction: Looking for a new novel that will keep you compulsively turning the pages? “The Plot” by Jean Hanff Korelitz is an aptly named psychological thriller. The author excels at cleverly plotting this suspenseful look at a struggling author whose sudden success sets him on a dark path. There are enough twists and turns in this tale to make it one of the most talked-about newly published novels.

Non-Fiction: Everyone talks about the weather but here’s a guy with a very British-sounding name who really knows what he’s talking about. Tristan Gooley writes popular guidebooks to the weather, the woods, the water, and just about any facet of nature. No mere armchair meteorologist, Mr. Gooley has also both sailed and flown solo across the Atlantic among other adventures. With his encyclopedic knowledge of how nature works, he’s the one person you’d like to have with if you were lost in the woods. The Blanding has several of Mr. Gooley’s books, including his latest, “The Secret World of Weather”.

The Blanding Library, 124 Bay State Rd., (phone: 508-252-4236) is open Monday through Thursday from 10 until 8, and on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 4. Closed Sundays and holidays. www.blandinglibrary.net
