Once again, the Seekonk Letter Carriers saddled up to conduct their long-standing springtime food drive; food collected during this annual event will benefit local residents, as all the donations went to the Doorways food pantry. The drive raised over 2,000 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of the people of Seekonk and the willingness of the letter carriers to undertake the extra work involved in collecting the donations. The food drive provides not only a great quantity of much needed food but also provides a great deal of much needed variety. When a person starts to prepare their favorite dish, nothing works so well as having their favorite brand on the shelf.
The National Association of Letter Carriers has been conducting the food drive as a nationwide initiative since 1993, and the Seekonk Letter Carriers have been collecting for Doorways since the pantry opened in 2001. Last year, Doorways provided food support for 5,700 neighbors in need who made over 2,500 shopping trips. Over the last twenty-five years, Doorways has distributed almost two million pounds of food, all at no cost to our client families. We thank the community and especially the Letter Carriers for taking the time to help us in our mission.
