Brief recap of fall game scores and highlights

All EPHS Fall Sports Teams in State Playoffs
It has been a banner fall season for East Providence High School athletic teams. Every single team has qualified for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League playoffs. “It has been an impressive season for our high school boys and girls teams,” said a smiling superintendent of schools, Dr. Sandra Forand. Forand, herself a high school and collegiate athlete, was attending the EP-Moses Brown football game on October 25th at EPHS. Forand was attending the game in a foot cast, one day removed from foot surgery after running to stay in shape. “She can’t stay home when the Townies are in action,” said her husband who was nearby.

A frequent visitor to most Townie athletic games is Mayor Bob DaSilva. “Congratulations to both women’s and men’s East Providence High School squads for an excellent season. With so many teams heading into the playoffs, we wish you all the best and great success, said DaSilva after attending a recent girls soccer game. The REPORTER will provide regular updates to the state playoffs at ReporterToday.com.

EPHS Girls Volleyball Play for State Championship Saturday
(Each team has defeated the other once)
The Townie girls volleyball team will fact top seed North Kingstown for the state championship on Saturday November 8th in a 4 pm match at Rhode Island College. The once top ranked Townies defeated La Salle 3 games to 1 in a semifinal match this past Tuesday to advance to the championship match. The Townies fought their way through a tough semifinal against a school rival, La Salle, but came out on top and bring a 17-2 record to Saturday’s final. “We make it more difficult sometime, but we have good athletes and have persevered to this point,” said East Providence Head Coach Alex Butler.
Riding high in Division 1 volleyball all season, the Townies worked hard through state playoff action. East Providence lost out in state championship play last year and is determined to get back in contention this season. East Providence is ranked second just behind North Kingstown which EP defeated once this year. NK came back to answer that earlier Townies win by beating EP in a re-match at NK.

Coach Alex Butler’s team has wins over Classical, Cumberland, South Kingstown, Chariho, East Greenwich, Cranston East, Cranston West, La Salle Academy, Coventry, North Kingstown, Prout, South Kingstown, Coventry, Chariho and Portsmouth. The other loss was in an upset to Barrington.

All tickets for Saturday’s championship game must be purchased online at GoFan.com.

EPHS Football Quarterfinals on November 7th at EPHS 6 pm
East Providence High School football continues to march on to the playoffs after October 24th 32-0 drubbing of Moses Brown at EPHS. The Townies are ranked at #3 in the 11 team D2 just under Westerly and South Kingstown. Brady Platt took the opening kickoff and ran it back 74 yards for a touchdown before the Townie marching band and most fans were seated after playing the National Anthem. While East Providence went on to score 32 unanswered points, the defense was dominate and stopped Moses Brown at every turn. “The team has been determined to improve since a tough loss to Westerly,” said head coach Jonathan Stringfellow. “The coaches and team are united on working hard as we have a bye week and get ready for the playoffs. We will show up,” said Stringfellow. In an earlier game win over Coventry, Brady Platt and Isaac Rodriguez led the Townies with strong game performances.

The team plays in quarterfinal action on Friday night at EPHS 6 pm against Pawtucket.

Townie wins came against: West Warwick, Mt.Pleasant/T2 Co-op, Coventry, Pawtucket Co-op (Shea/Tolman), and Moses Brown. The two loses were against Westerly and South Kingstown.

11/27 EP vs. La Salle 10 Annual Thanksgiving Day game 10 am at La Salle this year

EPHS Boys Soccer win Qfinals, lose in Semis 1-0
The boys soccer team at 11-3-5 in Division 1 was in great shape heading into playoff action. At one time they were ranked number 1 after knocking off previously undefeated Hendricken. “Our regular season came to a close with a talented group of young men, including 9 seniors poised to become alumni, securing a 3-2 win over Mt. Hope,” said head coach Tim Calouro. “The Huskies scored the initial goals, resulting in a 2-0 halftime deficit. However, our team has consistently demonstrated the ability to overcome obstacles and secure wins. Throughout the season, our team has compiled an impressive record of 11-3-5. With a demanding schedule that included two matches against both Bishop Hendricken and Lasalle, our losses were against top-ranked opponents.” A key player for EP is Kyle Desrosiers. The Townie netminder has been stingy in goal, keeping most opponents in check. “Desrosiers communicates well while in net. Our team needs his leadership to do well in the playoffs,” added the coach.

The Townies defeated La Salle 1-0 in a quarterfinal match at La Salle. Kyle Desrosiers was once again superb in net as he turned aside 12 Ram shots on goal, including 3 during penalty kicks. However, East Providence’s luck ran out when they lost 1-0 to North Kingstown in the semifinals at Rhode Island College on Wednesday night in a heartbreaking match. “Unfortunately, we suffered a 1-0 defeat. NK scored with 1:42 remaining. We hit the post twice and were unable to secure the go-ahead goal,” said RI Coach of the Year and Townie leader Tim Calouro. East Providence controlled possession for most of the game but came up just short. “The game can be unfortunate at times,” added Calouro. “I commend our team of young men. Thank you to my coaching staff and senior captains! Thank you for all the support this season! We would like to express our gratitude to these young men and their families. It has been a great year, but we still have work to do!” said an optimistic coach. “When playing our best soccer, we can beat anyone.”

Townie wins this year were against Providence Country Day, Smithfield, Central Falls, Bishop Hendricken, North Kingstown, Classical, Portsmouth, Central, South Kingstown, St. Raphael Academy and Mt. Hope.

EPHS Girls Soccer loses in Two OT & Shootout to Prout
The Townie girls soccer team had a great run in Division 2 play and was very hopeful as playoffs approached.
Ep defeated West Warwick, PCD, Middletown, Scituate, Coventry, Narragansett, Prout, Moses Brown, Middletown, Coventry, Narragansett and Moses Brown (in no particular order).

In a Narragansett win, Eva Fontaine had three goals, and Amalia Amico and Victoria Capelo added two assists. Sadie Gagnon had three saves in net for Ep. In the 1-0 win over Coventry, Amalia Amico scored the lone Townie goal on an assist from Victoria Capelo. Sadie Gagnon was sharp in net with 6 saves.

Recent action saw EP win a thrilling 1-0 match against Moses Brown. Eva Fontaine scored the winning goal in a rebound head shot from an Amalia Amico direct kick. Goal keeper Sadie Gagnon added 3 saves.

The Townies beat Middletown 3-1 in quarterfinal action but then lost a heartbreaker to Prout in a semifinal game at EPHS on Wednesday night. Ep lost out on a chance to play for the state championship on Saturday but finished with a great season overall. The Townies lost after 90 minutes of scoreless soccer and 10 rounds of penalty kicks.

EPHS Girls Tennis wins Qfinals, lost in Semis
The girls tennis team had a successful season in D2 and hoped to make it to the finals after winning the quarterfinal match against North Smithfield 4-0. However, the team lost to Rogers High in a close 4-3 battle in semifinal action. The team had prior wins over North Smithfield, Westerly, North Providence, Woonsocket, PCD/SRA Co-op, Lincoln School – Prov, Cranston East, Rogers, Middletown, Cumberland, Lincoln, Pilgrim and Chariho. The lone loss came in a close match to Number 1 Prout. In a tight match over Rogers, Chloe Sullo and Maura Roche pulled out the deciding match to secure the hard fought 4-3 win.

EPHS Girls Cross Country
The Girls Cross Country team had a strong showing at the Bronco Invitational last month. Leading the team was Melony Sotomayer, who set a new personal best. Also scoring and setting personal bests were Stella Nunez, Abigail Beatrice, Aneska Amroza, Margaret Thompson, and Sophia Olive, who powered through the final stretch.

Earlier last month, the girls had an impressive victory over Tiverton. Runners continue to show their strength and determination. A huge congratulations to Aneska Ambroz, Abigail Beatrice, Stella Nunez, Melany Sotomayor, and Maggy Thompson, who all ran course and seasonal best times. Also helping to score a win was Sophie Olive, who contributed crucial points to the team’s success.

In another thrilling meet, Ep secured two wins against Pawtucket and Tiverton, but fell just one point short to Moses Brown. A great effort by Melany Sotomayor and Sophie Olive, who each shaved over a minute off their times, and to Maggy Thomson, who took off 2 minutes.

EPHS Boys Cross Country
The Boys Cross Country team also has an outstanding performance at the Bronco Invitational, where they secured an impressive 3rd place team finish. Leading the way was Gerarld Gagnon, followed closely by Sean Black, Cormac Moran, Dan Lukusa, Anthony Mendonca, and Ben Sousa with each athlete contributing crucial points to the team’s success.

In earlier action the boys team defeated Tiverton and lost to Lasalle, and Portsmouth in their final dual meet of the season. The Townies finished with a winning record of five wins and four losses in the Metropolitan Division. Top finishers for the Townies during the meet were: Sean Black, Cormac Moran, Daniel Lukusa, Anthony Mendonca, Will Budnick, Ben Sousa, and Tristan Tysvaer.

Ocean State Makos win Northern CT Fall Baseball Classic
Travel team features 3 EPHS Townies
With major help from three members of the East Providence High School baseball team, the Ocean State Makos 15/16U travel team won the Northern CT Fall Baseball Classic. The weekend tourney took place on October 18 & 19 in Hartford, Conn. The Makos swept the tournament, winning all three games to take the championship. The Townies playing for the Makos are Chris Charbonneau, Jonathan Renaud and Jamison Sydney. Michael Sabourin of East Providence also was a club advisor and helped by coaching the weekend series. In the first game on Saturday, the Makos broke open the game with a 12 run fourth inning. With the bases loaded, JJ Renaud was struck by a pitch to force in a run and then fellow Townie Chris Charbonneau laced a triple to clear the bases. Charbonneau, Renaud, Sam Brandies, Jayce Lanterman, Finn Henderson, Tyler Boiani, Cooper Lantz, and Andrew Rapose all had hits for the Makos.

After two innings the Makos led 3-0 but the Bears tied it at 3 in the top half of the third. Makos went ahead with two runs in the bottom of the third and the Bears scored to tie the game going into the last inning. The Makos Jayce Lanterman walked and moved to third base on a double by Henderson. On a hard ground ball single by Sam Brandies, Lanterman scored with the walk-off run for the Makos. JJ Renaud went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Ocean State Makos 15/16U in hits. The win put them in the championship game on Sunday against the CT Capitals 15U.

The undefeated Makos would win the championship with a convincing 11-3 win against the Ct. Capitals 15U. Ct. scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Makos struck back with three runs in the bottom half of the first. Wheelchair Bowlers of America Tourney
The East Providence Lanes hosted the 2025 Patton-Stevens Foundations Wheel Chair Bowlers of America Fall Classic in late October. The four-day bowling tournament brought members of the Wheelchair Bowlers of America from across the country to share the love of the game with fellow bowlers and to bring awareness to the difficulties Veterans and active duty members face. Each year they team up with the Steven’s Family Foundation and Matthew Patton Foundation to empower and improve the lives of others and to raise awareness for mental health needs, particularly in the military community. “I was honored to join Director of the Office of Veteran’s Services Kasim Yarn and other guests to throw out the first roll at the opening of the 2025 Patton-Stevens Foundations Wheelchair Bowlers of America Fall Classic at the East Providence Lanes,” said Mayor Bob DaSilva.
