Dear Seekonk,

Posted

This may turn into a long read but it may be well worth it to some. I am a Lifer. A Lifer is someone who has lived in Seekonk all of their life or in my case nearly all of it. (1964).

My mother's family are Lifers. The Saleeba's have been here for over 100 years and we continue to grow. To a Lifer, this is home until the end. For those of you passing through whether it be for career or education you have to be able to recognize when Lifer's are concerned about community.

Consider this a plea for you to become engaged in your town government. I'm not saying you have to do to anything except be aware. Your tax dollars even on a short term keep services maintained or moving forward. If your life here is short term because of career or education your votes matter. Your participation matters and not just on the athletic fields.

Almost 30 years ago I began my municipal education. No degree, no certification, just participation. I learned from the people who knew a thing or two about town government. Some I agreed with and others I did not but I learned and drew on their experience.

On June 22, 2020 we will be holding our "Spring Town Meeting". Each Spring we collectively vote on a Budget Presentation for the next Fiscal Year that begins July 1st.

I am planning on being there as long as I'm in good health that day however, it is never too late to get involved. If there is something you don't understand, ask the hard questions. Don't be intimidated with the surroundings. I remember when I did, felt intimidated but not anymore.

People working here under contract (some live here and some don't) will leave before me. Selectmen change every year. Some extremely experienced and others not so much but those not so much are trying and those are the ones I look to for the future.

I will work with anyone who is interested in getting involved. I will share what I know, I will help you understand how things work and answer the unanswered questions, I will help you if your interested in keeping Seekonk a place where people "want" to come and possibly stay. Be a "Lifer". Send me a PM any time.

We need leaders. I did my turn what seems like a "lifetime" ago. I am offering a helping hand to anyone who will step up and lead. Consider this a help wanted ad. Be a Lifer and be a vocal one. I miss you Beverly Hart, Bob DelRosso, Robert McLintock, Jack Bowden, and countless others who served.

Thank you
Doreen Taylor
