$1.4 Million Sought for Seekonk Senior Center Expansion

Posted

Voters at the November 18 town meeting will be asked to appropriate $1.4 million for renovations of the unused space in the Seekonk senior center at 540 Arcade Avenue. The first floor is used for the seniors and the human services department. However, the building’s upper floor is currently unoccupied. The total building size is 6000 square feet.

Voters at the November 2018 town meeting appropriated $50,000 for the development of plans for phase two of the senior center.

“We know what we want to do, we know what’s going in there, we have a cost estimate here,” building committee chairperson Michelle Hines told the Seekonk board of selectmen on October 30. “We need money to go forward.”

Hines said the changes will include the installation of an elevator, along with offices for the Parks and Recreation Director and the Veterans Agent, a conference room, and a pool table room. There will also be storage space designated for the two town employees.

“The back half of the building will be open space,” Hines noted. “Open space is for activities.”

Selectmen approved a motion to fund the project through the town’s general fund instead of by a temporary tax increase.
