TAKE A WALK WITH US, SEEKONK LAND TRUST

Posted

The Seekonk Land Conservation Trust has scheduled events for March and April. We hope you can join us for these activities and to introduce you to the Seekonk Land Trust’s new Stewardship Coordinator, Paul Miller. Paul comes to us after having worked many years in the Florida Dry Prairie, headwaters of the Everglades, and for other Land Trusts in western and coastal Maine. He has a strong background in conservation, wildlife ecology, stewardship and land management and is implementing a new computerized management tool called ‘Landscape’ to assist these efforts. His presence will assist the Land Trust in managing and maintaining trails, working with volunteers and participating in outdoor education and community affairs.  Paul will be the featured speaker at the Land Trust Annual Meeting on April 6 at Seekonk Library which all are welcome to attend.

March 19, Saturday 9 - 11am
Winter’s Last Gasp, Osamequin Farm, 80 Walnut Street (off Prospect Str)
Join us on this last day of winter and enjoy a walk in the woods with Paul Miller and Tom Webb. Paul is the new Stewardship Coordinator for Seekonk Land Conservation Trust (SLCT) and Tom is SLCT Board President. Test your ability and skill at recognizing trees by bark and shape; look for bird cavities and nests, and explore the woodland trails behind Osamaquin Farm finding evidence of how plants and animals survive throughout the winter. Andrew Jencks will be on hand to provide a historical perspective on the Osamaquin property.
Family friendly, easy trail less than 2 miles of walking. Wear boots for mud/snow, use tick repellent, and bring your camera and binoculars!
Meeting point and parking: Meet by the large barn behind the homestead, park on the right side of Walnut Street

As background to provide some context, Osamaquin Farm’s name comes from the “great leader,” Massosoit Ousamequin of the Pokanoket nation, and their mission at the Farm is to share their historic land by hosting a cooperative of small scale farmers, public gatherings, and educational opportunities for the community. The farm has been in the Jenck’s family for over a century, but the original farm was purchased by the Carpenter family in the mid-1600s. In addition to raising sustainably grown crops, Osamaquin hosts educational events and seasonal gatherings, and so is sharing their space with us in the community.
