School Committee Delays Decision on Meeting Broadcasts

Posted

The Seekonk School Committee has delayed a decision on whether or not to resume a live broadcast of their meetings on Facebook until the April 10 meeting.

Chair Erin Brouillette made the decision last December to halt the use of the service, which was criticized by member Noah Escaler.

Escaler made a motion at Monday’s school committee meeting to resume the live broadcasts, arguing it was important to provide “accessibility” and “transparency” to the public.

Other committee members expressed reluctance to use Facebook, citing safety and privacy concerns.

“I think it is important for everyone to have access to our meetings,” said member Meaghan Mahoney. “I do think we have to be aware of doing it in a safe way. I think we need to pursue another option other than Facebook.”

Kyle Juckett, a candidate for the school committee, urged the members to restore the live broadcasts on a temporary basis.

“It wasn’t voted (by the committee) to be taken down,” Juckett said. “It’s a way for people to see what’s going on within our schools.
