Whooo’s Out in Winter? Search for Owls and Animal Tracks in the Snow!

(December 5, 2019) – Pool on your warm mittens and hat and head outside to search for owls on the evening trails or animal tracks in the snow. Get the kids outside in the frosty air and have some fun!

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Thanks to Citizens Bank, the Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Join Audubon for crafts, nature stories, animal discoveries, hikes and more. No need to register!

Owls of Caratunk

There are a number of amazing species of owls that live in New England. You might have one in your own back yard! We'll take a pictorial look at our native owls, hear their calls, learn about their remarkable adaptations and meet a live owl. Advance registration is required. For ages 7 and up. Owl Prowl at Fort Refuge

January 10, 2020; 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Head out with Audubon on a winter night to search for owls. An Audubon naturalist will call for different species as you walk through the forest. We never know if we'll hear or see an owl, but participants will learn a lot and have a great night hike. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a flashlight. Hike will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather or icy trails. Advance registration required. For ages 9 and up. Animal Tracks and Signs for Families
Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge, Smithfield, RI
January 11, 2020; 2:00 – 4:00 pm

Learn how to identify different tracks and other signs of our native mammals and birds. Explore track patterns (can you hop like a 'bounder' or strut like a 'perfect stepper'?) and investigate artifacts, then make plaster tracks to take home. End the program with a walk on the trails to see what evidence can be found of wild things. Although all are welcome, this class will be geared for families with children. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes. For ages 5 and up. Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge, 12 Sanderson Road, Smithfield, RI; Fee: $12 member adult/child pair; $6 each additional member; $16 non-member adult/child pair; $8 each additional non-member. Winter Animal Tracking
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA
January 11, 2020; 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Learn how to identify different tracks and other signs of our native mammals. Begin in the barn and learn about various animal tracks, then head out on the trails to see what evidence can be found of wild things. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy walking shoes or boots. Some parts of the trail are rocky and uneven. Warm drinks and a light snack will be served. For ages 10 and up. Build a Birdhouse with Audubon

January 12, 2020; 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Build a birdhouse in the Caratunk barn while enjoying some cocoa, coffee and snacks. Audubon will provide the plans, materials and necessary tools to share*. Choose to take the birdhouse home or leave it for Audubon to install on the wildlife refuge! Program also includes a short hike, weather permitting. One birdhouse kit per adult/child pair. * Participants are encouraged to bring their own hammer and safety glasses. Li’l Peeps

This popular program introduces children ages 18 months to 2 years to the delights of nature through age-appropriate, hands-on activities. Along with a nature lesson, activities may include nature walks, crafts, songs and stories. This is also a wonderful opportunity to make new friends with the other children and parents. Registration is required. Adults must accompany children and there are no refunds for missed classes. In order to maintain an age-appropriate program we ask that older siblings not accompany the parent/child team.  Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, 1401 Hope Street, Bristol, RI; Fee for six-week series: $60/member child, $76/two member siblings; $65/non-member child, $82/two non-member siblings. Winter Walk in the Woods

Take a hike around Caratunk Wildlife Refuge and learn how winter affects the flora and fauna, including resident muskrat, otter, deer and Wild Turkeys. Warm drinks and snacks will be served. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Bring your binoculars and camera. Advance registration required. For ages 9 and up. Even in the cold, winter is a great time to get outside in the woods. Join Scott Ruhren, Audubon director of conservation, for an easy trail ramble at the Marion Eppley Wildlife Refuge. Look for wildlife and the signs they leave behind on this winter guided winter walk.
