Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium explores the “Birds of The Bay” this month, welcomes a rare orange lobster

Posted

Newport, R.I. – June 6, 2019 –The birds of Narragansett Bay soar into the spotlight at Save The Bay’s Exploration Center and Aquarium this June. This month’s aquarium visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the hundreds of bird species that frequent local waters through self-guided activities, including a craft, themed stories, and a scavenger hunt. With Memorial Day behind us, the Exploration Center and Aquarium on Easton’s Beach in Newport has resumed summer hours and is now open daily, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

June’s “Birds of The Bay” programming theme intends to draw attention to the more than 200 bird species that flock to Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay from around the world every year, including great egret, osprey and piping plover. Guests to the aquarium will learn all about these local birds by building their very own bird out of recycled materials, embarking on a bird-themed scavenger hunt, exploring a selection of themed stories, or by stepping outside onto Easton’s Beach to view them firsthand.

While visitors at the aquarium are learning about local birds, they can also meet the aquarium’s newest arrival: a rare orange lobster. Though less surprising in color than the ever-popular blue lobster, orange and yellow lobsters occur even more infrequently, only appearing once in every 30 million.

Guests who are interested in getting an even closer look at Bay creatures can purchase tickets to this month’s Feeding Frenzy, taking place on Thursday, June 20 at 5 p.m. This exciting after-hours event allows guests to participate in the aquarium creatures’ favorite time of day: feeding time. Tickets ($10 general admission; $8 for Save The Bay members) can be purchased at savebay.org/feedingfrenzy.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium is located in the Easton’s Beach Rotunda at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport, Rhode Island. The center is open daily 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Memorial Day-Labor Day. General admission to the Aquarium is $8; $7 for seniors and college students with ID; and free for children under 3 and Save The Bay Family members. The Exploration Center and Aquarium also now offers free general admission to all military and first responders with current ID, as well as a reduced admission of $7 for their guests.
