November 2019 Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

(September 30, 2019) – Head out on the quiet, cool morning trails and search for birds and other wildlife, or hike in the evening in search of beavers, muskrats and otters in their ponds! Audubon has plenty of natural fun in store this November. Just bundle up, get out and go!

Beavers of Fisherville
Fisherville Wildlife Refuge, Exeter, RI
November 1, 2019; 5:30 – 7:00 pm

Join Audubon for an evening walk and discussion regarding the beavers that have taken up residence in the Fisherville Pond. We will take a look at beaver dams, lodges and hopefully observe the beaver themselves. At dusk, these creatures become active, so we may get to see these engineers at work. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight.

Audubon Bird and Wildlife Carving Exposition
Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium, Bristol, RI

Award-winning wildlife artists from throughout New England are returning to Audubon this autumn. Unique hand-carved bird and wildlife pieces will be on display and for sale. Meet the artists, shop the carvings, observe demonstrations and enjoy the natural beauty of the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in fall. This two-day event is one of New England's finest bird and wildlife carving shows.

FREE Wednesday Morning Bird Walks

Audubon offers FREE Wednesday Morning Bird Walks with naturalist Laura Carberry. Each week a new birding destination will be chosen. Please visit the Audubon website (asri.org) or Facebook Page for the location. Contact Laura at lcarberry@asri.org for more information.

Audubon Eastern Massachusetts Coastal Birding Trip
November 7, 2019; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Hop aboard the Audubon van for a day of exploring beautiful birding spots from Westport to Fairhaven, MA. Ocean shores, inland ponds, forests, and marshes are all on the itinerary. Exact plans will depend on what birds are being reported as the day draws near — possible spots include Acoaxet, Allen’s Pond, Gooseberry Neck, and Egypt Lane ponds, among others. Bring a lunch and water, and dress for the weather, including walking on the beach.

Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

Sea Glass Jewelry 201

Join Audubon for an evening walk and discussion regarding the muskrat and otter that have taken up residence in Muskrat Pond at Caratunk. Learn all about these fascinating animals and then take a walk to search for them in their natural habitat. These animals become active at dusk, so we may have an opportunity to see them foraging for their dinner. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight.

Life through the Lens: Moments in New England and Abroad

Hecmar Delgado has captured images of landscapes and wildlife in blistering summer heat, chilling winter storms, and everything in between. Taken during his travels from New England to South America, each image in this exhibit tells a story. Hecmar aims to foster an appreciation for the wonders of nature and to give a unique perspective on photography as an art form.

Fairy Houses and Wine

Fairies aren’t just for kids! Adults, come get creative as you make an enchanting scene using natural materials while enjoying a glass of wine. Fairy houses make beautiful and interesting centerpieces or decorations for the winter season. All materials will be provided, but if you have something special you would like to use, bring it along.

Audubon Owl Prowl at Fort Refuge
Audubon Fort Wildlife Refuge, North Smithfield, RI

Visit Fort Wildlife Refuge on an autumn night to search for owls. An Audubon naturalist will call for different species as you walk through the forest. We never know if we'll hear or see an owl, but participants will learn a lot and have a great night hike. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a flashlight. Hike will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather or icy trails.

Sunday Morning Hike with Audubon
Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA

Start your Sunday off with a morning hike at Caratunk! An Audubon naturalist will lead the walk to search for animals that may be up early, such as deer, turkeys, otter and more. Back at the barn, warm cider and coffee will be served. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring your binoculars.

Day After Thanksgiving

Give thanks for all that nature has given us! The day after Thanksgiving is for leftovers, but at Audubon it is also a day to celebrate nature. Bring the kids for fun activities and a Turkey Trot Nature Walk. No registration required.

Explore Prudence Island
Prudence Island, RI
November 29, 2019; 9:45 am – 4:45 pm

Eat too much turkey and pie? Then come to Prudence Island for a day of walking, exploring and enjoying the beauty of Narragansett Bay. Take several short walks, look for harbor seals hauled out in the afternoon, search for returning sea ducks, and visit many of the Reserve's properties. Upon arrival on Prudence, guests will be greeted by Reserve educators who will be guides and provide transportation in a passenger van for the day. Due to limited space, registration is required.
