Arthur Francis Tobin, 87, of Rehoboth, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 30, 2022, after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Mary Frances (Lawrence) Tobin to whom he was married for 66 years.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William E. and Theresa A. (Gadoury) Tobin. He was a 1952 graduate of Rogers High School in Newport, RI. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in education from Rhode Island College and a Master’s degree in occupational education from Northeastern University. He was an Industrial Arts teacher at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School for 21 years until he retired. He also taught Driver’s Education, and served as the high school’s drama coach for many years. After his teaching career, he went on to found and run Tobin Machine and Tool, in Seekonk. Arthur was committed to public service and served as a Selectman and Town Moderator, as well as other boards and commissions in the town of Rehoboth, including the Rehoboth Cemetery Association and the Rehoboth Senior Center Building Committee. He also served in the Rhode Island National Guard as a young man, and on the Bristol County Mosquito Control Board. He was a member of the Rehoboth Lions Club for many years, and was involved with the Boy Scouts and 4-H Clubs when his children were members. He was a life-long Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots fan, and he took pride in celebrating their many championships. Arthur elevated the art of the southeastern New England Portuguese clamboil to new heights.

Besides his wife, he leaves five children, Michael Tobin of Apollo Beach, FL, Matthew Tobin and his wife Kristin of Lakeville, MA, Brian Tobin and his husband Bill Short of Mount Washington, MA, Laura Mercer of Rehoboth, and Jason Tobin and his partner Lynne Sabourin Chernasky of Burrillville. He also leaves three grandchildren, Abigail Tobin, Drury Mercer, and Lily Mercer. He was the brother of the late Paul and Roland Tobin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved son-in-law David Mercer.


His funeral service will be private. The family will plan a memorial service to celebrate his life at a later date, once conditions make it safe to do so.
