Bernard & Duarte Homer for Softball; Hallene complete game baseball shutout
Softball 10-3; Baseball 10-1
It was an impressive night for the East Providence High School softball and baseball teams in simultaneous games at the EPHS campus Monday night. Also winning was girls lacrosse. The fields were alive with excitement as teams had huge wins. First the girls softball team (10-3) defeated Cumberland High 13-1 in a game dominated by Audrey Bernard’s four RBI, including a three-run homerun to center field. East Providence got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Audrey Bernard grounded out, and Ava Silva singled down the left field line, each scoring one run. The Townies added six more runs in the bottom of the second inning on six hits. Caroline Welch singled, scoring two runs, Audrey Bernard homered to center field, scoring three runs, and Maura Roche singled, scoring one run. A single by Marianna Pina, and a fielder's choice by Ava Silva helped East Providence Varsity Townies extend their early lead in the third.
East Providence scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run to center field by Avery Duarte. Cassie Dulude earned the win for East Providence. The pitcher surrendered six hits and one run over four innings, striking out four and walking none. The Townies tallied 13 hits in the game. Ella Grimley and Caroline Welch each had three hits and Ava Silva was two for three at bat. East Providence didn't commit a single error in the field. EP Baseball at 10-1 after 9-0 shutout over Cumberland
When East Providence graduated three top pitchers from last year’s squad, many thought that pitching could be a problem this season. So far the trio of senior Lefty Hallene, Kyle Desrosiers and JJ Renaud have been lights out. Each has been nearly unbeatable with Renaud and Hallene tossing back-to-back no hitters. Renaud threw a three-hit masterpiece in shutting out perennial power and defending state champion Hendricken, 3-0. Also helping on the mound is Jose Figueroa and Ryan Charves. The Townies featured another complete game win Monday with Ben Lefty Hallene pitching a shutout to lead East Providence past Cumberland 9-0 at EPHS. The lefty pitcher continued to impress as he was strong on the mound throughout. Max Correiro had three hits in four at bats in the win. Correiro doubled in the first inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the fourth inning. East Providence got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after a Correiro double to center field, with Kyle Desrosiers hitting a sacrifice fly, each knocking in runs. EP extended their early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second thanks to RBI singles by Gavin Palombo and Correiro.
East Providence had 11 hits in the game with Correiro and Jamison Sydney each getting three hits each. Jamison Sydney continued to be red hot at the plate with his three hits and another strong catching performance. Aidan Martins and Gavin Palombo each had two hits for the Townies. East Providence continued to run the bases with four stolen bases for the game. Defense turned a key double play. JJ Renaud added a hit and scored two runs. Once again EP played well on defense. The Townies will travel to Cranston West this Wednesday for a 4:00 PM game.
