The 5-3 Townie boys basketball team had wins last month over Pilgrim HS 68-40, Tiverton HS 62-37, Cranston East 73-58, North Providence 93-80 and Smithfield 50-49. The team lost to Barrington HS 60-81, Mt. Pleasant HS 51-55, and to Central HS 52-74.
In the loss to Barrington, the game was competitive for a half with the game tied at halftime. However, Barrington pulled away in the second half for a convincing 81-60 win.
Earlier the team had moved to 3-0 with a win over Cranston East. Jayden Vaz continued his fast start with a double-double 24 points and 13 rebounds. Jaydason Barros also hit a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
In the win over Tiverton, freshman Robbie Mason hit a game high 20 points with Jayden Vaz adding 16. The team had an early season win over Pilgrim with Vaz leading all scorers with 18 points and Barros scoring 14 for the 68-40 win.
Head coach Joe Andrade, while optimistic about the talent potential of his “very young team,” feels that they have much room for improvement. “Sometimes we lose focus, intensity and struggle to get it back,” said the coach. “We are a very young team with only one senior. We start a freshman, 1 sophomore, 2 juniors and 1 senior,” said Andrade.
In the team’s win over North Providence, Vaz scored 10 points and had 12 rebounds in just the first quarter. Vaz ended up with 27 points for the game. Isaac Rodriguez had 13 points.
