Ways to Honor Our Veterans and Present Military Service Members

Posted

Display an American flag, attend a Veterans' Day ceremony, actively recognize and greet them, document their service, and read stories about their lives and military service contributions so their sacrifices and efforts will not be forgotten.

Send a note or hand-made or commercial card to a service member you know, to a church, or to the veterans at the Volunteer Office, VA Medical Center 830 Chalkstone Ave. Providence, RI 02908 (They welcome cards year-round for birthdays, get well, thinking of you, and other holidays.) and to the RI Veterans Community 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, RI 02809. Please leave the envelopes unsealed, but tuck the flap inside, and address it "to any veteran".

Please remember the families of our active service members who are away from home. Share a word of encouragement, card, and ask how to assist them, ex. provide a meal, babysit, run errands, etc.

A special double celebration to recognize all veterans and service members of East Providence, RI was held in Nov. 2021. View a video of that live EPVME Re-dedication ceremony and other tributes, on the website, https://sites.google.com/view/epvmer2021  If need be, visit the E. Prov. city libraries to view it on the internet or loan a DVD and/or a CD to view on your home computer without internet access.

Also find on the website the "EP Military Service Honor Roll" to learn more about our service women and men. Please send updates, additional military details (a short biography, photo), and new names to epvme@hotmail.com

Visit the war memorial bridges and plaques along the EPVME (suggested tour map on the website) and the memorial war gardens scattered throughout the city. Volunteer to maintain the plants at one of these memorial sites by contacting the EP Department of Parks and Recreation. Thank you, volunteers!

See photos of these plaques and read about these men in a non-circulating reference book, entitled "Veterans with Individual War Memorials in E. Prov., RI". The book is available at both of the EP city libraries, EP Historical Society's Hunt House, EP High School, Martin Middle School, RI College Adam's Library, and in Pawtucket, RI at St. Raphael Academy and the Daggett House. An effort is underway to incorporate a short biography of each man and his photo on a sign at his memorial location. Suggestions how to display this information are welcome.

Thank you, veterans, military service and reserve members, for your service to our country!
Happy Veterans' Day, Nov. 11th!
