Posted

John J. Slater, 89, of Rumford, passed away peacefully at his home with family by his side on Sunday, April 3, 2022. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth E. (Field) Slater, who passed in September of 2021. Born in Washington, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Michael P. Sr. and Ada (McMahon) Slater.

John was a Korean War veteran and was proud of his four years of service in the U. S. Air Force, being honorably discharged. He worked for thirty-one years as a dealer account manager for Ford Motor Credit Co., retiring in 1996. More recently, he had a “second career” at the Hillside Country Club in Rehoboth, where he worked for ten years. John was a devoted communicant of St. Margaret Parish in Rumford and was an avid golfer and fisherman.

He leaves two daughters, Mary Regina Slater (John Menissian) of Rumford and Catherine O’Brien (James) in Indiana; two grandchildren, Ronald Turner of Maine, and Kylie Turner; a sister, Mary Regina “Polly” Dowling in Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews. He was the grandfather of the late Sarah E. Turner, the brother of the late M. Paul Slater, Jr., and the brother-in-law of the late Gerald Dowling. John’s family would like to extend their most sincere and deepest appreciation to John’s caregivers Glendy, Maria, Suset, Elizabeth and devoted family friend, Stacy Strife. Without their dedication, he would not have been able to remain at home, which was his wish. Also, thanks to his Rehab Warriors, Scott and Nelson and nurse, Carolyn B at VNA of Care New England for their professionalism and unwavering support of John in his journey.

His funeral with Military Honors will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. from WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret’s Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford. Interment at Mt. St. Mary Cemetery will be private. VISITATION will be held on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. www.TRIPPFUNERALHOME.com
